Mississippi Southern was third, followed in order by Southern Illinois, Gramb- ling, Hofstra, Westminster (Pa.), and Mt. St. Mary’s (tied for sev enth), Northern Michigan and Wittenberg. Ohio State was the unanimous choice of the special panel of sports writers and broadcasters participating in the major poll. The small college selectors gave Prairie View seven of the ten first place votes and a total of 97 points. When one high school graduates three football players to a college as regulars, it is exceptional. However, the exception prevails at A&M where the Aggies of Coach Jim Myers make spring preparations for the 1961 season. Running side-by-side, on the Ma roon, or first team, are Wayland Simmons at left tackle and Wayne Freiling at left guard. Both were star players at San Antonio Edi son. A third Edison performer who has looked good in the spring drills and is currently the number two fullback is Eddie YanDyke. Myers has praise for all three of the gridders. “Simmons and Freiling should prove two of our better linemen next season, and VanDyke is do ing a really fine job this spring. Eddie (VanDyke) has been both ered by a back injury, but should be back in good condition soon,” Myers said. Simmons and Freiling will be senior, two-year lettermen and weigh 220 and 200, respectively. A star on defense as a sopho more, Simmons earned a starting berth both on offense and defense last season. Freiling started as a guard when a sophomore in 1959, but was moved to tackle about half way through that campaign. Only 5-8, Wayne is called “Jug” by his team mates because of his build. Despite his short stature, he is a great competitor, aggres sive and has much desire. Freiling claims he likes defense better than offense. His last two years at Edison, he played both ways and was instrumental in his team going to the state semi-finals VanDyke earned a freshman nu meral in 1958, was a 1959 varsity squadman and won a varsity letter last year. Tabbed as a left halfback at the outset of the 1960 season, VanDyke was later moved to fullback—the position he now holds. All three of the Edison products played their high school football under Coach George (Red) Fore hand. Ags Blast 3, The Aggie baseball team record ed its first win of the 1961 season yesterday in Houston as they Intramurals Rain postponed Class A Tennis yesterday, but the other intra mural sports, Class B Rifle and Class A Volleyball, managed to work in their contests. In Class^ A Volleyball, H-l slipped past Sq. 13 for a 2-1 win; Sq. 4 edged A-2, 2-1; Sq. 8 blasted E-l for a 2-0 victory; and Sq. 2 out-fought G-2 to win, 2-1. In the games in Class B Rifle, B-2 boomed past Sq. 4, 448-350; K-2 found the bulls-eye more often than M-Band and secured a 424- 332 victory; C-2 out-shot E-2, 485- 434; L-2 found the range in their contest with Sq. 5 and blasted them, 403-270; W-Band racked up 439 points’to 372 for Sq. 12. downed the Rice Owls, 6-3, in a non-conference practice tilt. A&M took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after a pair of singles, by Jerry Carter and Ray Hall. Two men had walked in the inning and one of them scored on a wild pitch. No more more scoring came un til the sixth inning when the Ag gies accounted for four more runs. To start the inning, Hall singled to right field, and Bill Puckett drew a base on balls. Stuffy Da vis then loaded the bases with an infield single which gave Dick Hickerson a chance to bring in two runs with a single to center field. The final two Cadet runs were scored as a result of Bob Collins’* two bagger to left field. Rice’s three runs came in the eighth, but only one of these runs was earned. The earned run re sulted from a triple by the Owls’ third baseman, Richard Kristynik. Collins was given credit for the Aggie win as he came in to relieve Ed Singley in the fifth inning, Olen Jordan finished the ninth inning for A&M. An interesting fact on Collins is that this was not only his first appearance of the year on the mound, but also his first appear ance in a Varsity baseball game, Collins has gained the nickname as the “Tenth Man” of the base ball team, since he came out of the Corps this spring. A&M’s hitting was much im proved over last Friday as they collected 10. Davis was the big man with the bat as he collected three hits out of four trips to the plate.
