THE BATTALION
Ag Golfers Start Tryout®
Ralph Johnston, a sophomore
from Long Island City, New York,
leads scorers vieing for places on
the 1961 Aggie Golf team.
Johnston carded a 70-71—141 on
the A&M course, two strokes bet
ter than the 70-73—143 posted by
Dickie Duble, a junior from Gal
veston.
Golf Coach Henry Ransom said
15 golfers are in competition and
will complete 216 holes of play in
rounds which will qualify the low
six scorers for participation in
spring meets.
Slowed by the inclement wea
ther of late, the linksmen will play
the local 18-hole course as often
as possible during the next three
weeks in hopes of getting in their
rounds.

Iowa Loses
Four Starters
To Scholastics

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Ninth-
ranked Iowa’s hopes to overtake
undefeated Ohio State in the Big
Ten basketball race collapsed
Wednesday when four Hawkeye
starters became scholastically in
eligible.
LEON B. WEISS
(Two Doors From Campus Theatre)
The only regular available for
the remainder of the season is
junior Don Nelson, the team’s lead
ing scorer with a 22-point average.
Sidelined by classroom failures
were sophomores Frank Allen and
Tom Harris, junior Dave Maher
and senior Ron Zagar.
“After a fine start this season,
the loss of these men certainly
dims any chance of a strong finish
in the conference race,” said Coach
Sharm Scheuerman.
The Hawkeyes have won 12 of
15 games, losing only to St. Louis,
Purdue and Cincinnati.
Iowa has a 4-1 conference record
—second best in the Big Ten—and
was considered the only team with
a chance to dethrone top-ranked
Ohio State.
