Ronnie Ledbetter (29) jumps high into the air Saturday in

The annual A&M Fish and Tex
as Shorthorn game is just around
the corner and as in the past the
game will be sponsored by the
Shriners.
However, this year’s game will
be sponsored by the Brazos Valley
Shrine Club instead of the Ben
Hur Temple of Austin, who has
taken the game for the past thir
teen years.
The main reason that the Ben
Hur Temple dropped the sponsor
ship is because they were engaged
in two other activities.
In the past, the Brazos Valley
Shrine Club has worked closely
with the Austin Chapter and are
certainly not newcomers to “run-,
ning the show.”
The Brazos Valley Club has al
ready engineered an extensive
ticket sale campaign as well as
program planning. The gate re
ceipts will be shared by the Club
and A&M College and concession
sales will be handled through the
college.
For the halftime show a number
of familiar performers will he on
hand. The Aggie Fish band will
perform along with the Fish drill
team from A&M. From Consoli
date!' High School will come their
band as well as their girl’s drill
team.
After taking over this year’s
annual benefit game the Brazos
Valley Shriners have made a con
tract for the game in College Sta
tion every other year. In addition
to the “home” Texas-A&M fresh
man games the local Shriners will
choose one game at College Station
each year to sponsor.
The proceeds from the game will
go into the Shriners’ giant fund
that is used to help crippled and
deformed children. More than
750,000 Shriners share this com
mon fund raising goal that nets
millions of dollars per year.
All kinds of drives are used to
raise the money which includes
the well-known Shriners Circus
that performs all over the United
States.
For their noble efforts in giving,
the Shriners have come to be
known as “the world’s greatest
philanthropists.”
TIL Amateur Rule Again
Lnder Fire; 4 It’s Ridiculous
By HAROLD V. RATLIFF
Associated Press Sports Writer
The amateur rule of the Texas
Interscholastic League again is in
the news with the usual protesta
tions of those running afoul of it
that “it’s ridiculous.”
Most everybody is pro-minded
about athletics except the high
school people! The outsiders don’t
think there’s anything wrong with
paying a schoolboy something ip

appreciation of his athletic ability.
They also take the attitude that
it’s penudious to limit what may
be given to a boy for his partici
pation.
Actually, this protestation never
will get anywhere—the Interschol
astic League will go right on with
its amateur rule because it be
lieves that when a sport is sup
posed to be amateur it should be
conducted that way.
Since this is the time of the
year when the alumni of the col
leges start getting in their re
cruiting licks, it is well to advise
the boys what they can not do in
order to retain their eligibility for
the remainder of the school year.
The amateur rule prohibits the
acceptance of cash or valuable Con
sideration for participation in ath
letics and it also says that a boy
can not compete on an athletic
team with a paid player or for
valuable consideration allows his
name to be used for the promotion
of any product, plan or service.

softball, swimming and diving,
tennis, track and field, weight lift
ing and wrestling are sports cov
ered by the amateur rule.
A boy may play against a paid
player but he can not play on the
same team with a paid player.
Acceptance of cash or valuable
consideration by someone else for
the boy is evading the rule and is
interpreted the same as the boy
receiving these items, says the
Interscholastic League. Accep
tance of golf balls, bags, clubs,
etc., and playing on any golf team
with a paid player is in violation
of the rule.
The signing of a letter of intent
with a college is a violation. The
boy is getting valuable considera
tion—the contract for an athletic
scholarship.
Violation of the rule results not
from participating in a rodeo event
but in accepting valuable consid
eration for it. A boy may enter
a rodeo contest as an individual
entry and win the event without
violating the amateur rule—but if
he accepts cash or valuable con
sideration (such as a horse or
calf) he violates the rule.
A boy may play summer base
ball but must not be on the same
team with a paid player although
he can play against other teams
that have paid players. He can
not receive expense money for
travel, meals or lodging. The
manager of the team has to handle
this money in the same way that
the high school coach would handle
the funds—the boy must not re
ceive any cash or transportation
tickets.
Gate receipts can not be distrib
uted among the players and even
though a boy did not accept his
share he still would violate the
rule because he would be on a
team that had paid players.
If a boy should hit a home run
and somebody took up a collection
to reward him, he could not accept
the money because it would make
him a paid player. All the other
players would become ineligible,
too, because they would be on a
team that had a paid player.
If some ! College alumnus pays
for lodging, meals, transportation
tickets or any other similar item
for a boy it will make that young
ster ineligible.
