faffe 4 College Statfon, Texas Wednesday, November 1(1,19C0 THE BATTALION Big ‘Louie’ Is Question As Opener Approaches Seven-foot Lewis Qualls it the big question mark as the Aggie basketball team approaches its opener with Trinity at San An tonio on Dec. 1. Aggie cagers have completed a month of practice and have two weeks before the first game and as Coach Bob Rogers puts it, “we’re still waiting to see whether or not Qualls comes through.” The Aggie Match Team success fully defended its first place standing in the Texas Intercol legiate Bowling Conference by winning eight points while losing only four. However, the rapidly rising San Antonio College moved within three points by posting a ten-two record. Pacing the Aggies to their victories was one of the team’s newcomers, Lee Wilson, with a dazzling 252-656. Other league highs were: from Texas U., Louie Englander, 241-624, Fred Barnes, 206-605, and Pat Hurley, 226-602; from SAC, Mike Greenwell, 220- 635, and Tony Pierulla, 215-601; from A&M, Larry Dantzler, 220- G14. ★ ★ * In the Hot-Shot League on Mon day night John Tinney’s 232-583 helped Pearce to maintain its league lead by winning three from Rogers claims his big sopho more center from Houston Smiley “is on the verge of being a great player but he hasn’t learned to go tough and move on every play.” If Qualls comes through, Rogers will play Carroll Broussard, last year’s sophomore sensation from Pt. Arthur, outside or on the wing. If not, then the 6-5 Broussard will have to go back inside. Norris. Meanwhile Eddie Autry posted a very nice 224-229-620, leading Kennedy to four, victories over Mahaney. While Tate was winning three from Haynes, co author A1 Rainosek blasted a tre mendous 201-460 to gain three from Harris. The team captained by Frank Pearce established a new league record in the high team game department with an 836, averaging 209 per man. This is good bowling in any league. ★ ★ ★ In the Monday late league, the action was fast and furious with the Jocks maintaining their league lead by taking four from the Pin- busters. However, the Cherries are only one point behind, winning three from the Splitniks. The 4 Studs and the Arabian Knights also came through by clobbering the Seven Tens and the Scungies, respectively. In addition to the anxiety sur rounding the Qualls factor, much will depend on the progress of Charlie Minor, sophomore play- maker from Pampa who has missed all work to date following a knee operation. There’s quite a battle going on for positions with only two points separating the two squads after three intrasquad scrimmages. Rogers shuffles his lineup daily and the “best men are on the first team each day.” Here are the battles by position: Elliott Craig, senior letterman from Beaumont, and Wayne An- nett, senior letterman from Chi- cota, are battling for the guard position. This is where Minor will challenge when and if he recovers from his knee operation.- For the two forward positions, four are contending—the Stanley twins, Pat and Don of Buna; Broussard, and Billy Young, Ha worth, Okla., sophomore. Windham, Qualls and Broussard are being alternated at the two post berths. If Qualls comes through Broussard will be an out side forward or wingman. Big noise to date in the pre season practice sessions have been the Stanley twins and Windham but Rogers is hoping for Brous sard to regain his shooting eye that helped him establish several new' A&M school marks last year including the first 400-point scorer in history. Aggies Alley Strong East Texas Flavor Displayed By Frosh Line There’s a strong East Texas flavor in the Aggie freshman line that faces its toughest game Sat urday afternoon against the Texas Yearlings on Kyle Field. Kickoff is 2 p.m. and it’s the finale for both clubs. The Fish have won three in a row but the Texas frosh have a much longer win skein going. They haven’t lost one in 15 starts. Four first-stringers on Coach Travis “Shorty" Hughes’ Fish line are from East Texas and three more are reserves. There’s also a couple of backs from this area—George Hargett of Linden and Jimmy Clark of Whitewright. The linemen are Tackle Jim Craig of Jasper, Guards Terry Mc Leod of Jasper and Mike Swan of Athens and Ronnie Carpenter, end from Marshall. The reserves are Bob Sullivan, Longview tackle; Center Mac Compton of Athens and Guard David Duncan of Jack sonville. The Fish line was over-shadowed in the early season by the wide play given to the speedy set of backs but the men up front have come through with the defense and blocking necessary for the backs to score nine touchdowns in the last three games. In addition to the East Texas forward wall, there’s Center Ray Kubala of West, End Ken Bode of Brady and Tackle Johnny Ko- lacek of George West. Others who have seen much action are Guard Jerry Pizzitola of Houston, Tackles Pat Barton of West and Gary Bennett of Galena Park and Ends Tom Ecker of Amarillo and* Larry Crutsinger of Brownwood. There can be many a slip be tween frosh and varsity competi tion, as is always the case, but still there are some fine prospects on the 1960 Aggie Fish team. Especially those linemen from East Texas.
