Fans, Coaches Like Wild Card Substitution Rule By The Associated Press KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — College football’s wild card substitution rule apparently has received the overwhelming approval of coaches and fans alike, the chairman of the NCAA Rules Committee said today. Gen. Robert R. Neyland, Uni versity of Tennessee athletic di rector and head of the committee, said he had heard nothing but praise for the rule. The rule allows a coach to send in one player between plays with out taking a time out or a penalty. Byer still hasn’t had a loss charged against him this year as his total amounts to 341 yards. Last weekend against Arkansas, Byer moved within 43 yards of SWC leader Coolidge Hunt of Tex- Terry Baker of Oregon State Leads Major College Offense By The Associated Press NEW YORK—Sophomore Terry Baker of Oregon State has taken over the total offense lead among major college football players, NCAA Service Bureau statistics disclosed today. Baker ended the three-week reign of VMI senior Howard Dyer. The Oregon State star has gained 1,265 yards. He is followed by Dyer with 1,209, Mel Melin of Washington State, 1,139, and Ron Miller of Wisconsin, 1,112. Miller is the leader in average gain per gain with 185.3 yards for six out ings. New pace-setters also showed up in other categories. Melin moved into the top spot in number of pass completions with 79, one more than Harold Stephens of Hardin-Simmons. Melin also leads in total aerial yardage with 1,120. Tom Gilburg of Syracuse moved from fifth place to first in punt ing with a 43.0 mark for 21 ef forts. Jerry Stovall of LSU is a close pursuer with a 42.98 average for 42 punts. Ed Dyas of Auburn and Tommy Wells of Georgia Tech are tied for the most field goals with seven. Each has one more than Durward Pennington of Geor gia. Charley Johnson of New Mexico State and Jake Gibbs of Missis sippi have thrown the most touch down passes, nine apiece. Dale Betty of Maryland has the highest completion average, .645. v as Tech. Hunt only gained 25 yards against Rice while Byer was the top ground gainer of the week end with 94 yards and is the only man in the top ten that hasn’t lost any yardage. Caffey, Murphy—Second Both Lee Roy Caffey and Jim Murphy are close for the second place ball carrying honors for the Aggies as Caffey has netted 166 and Murphy 151. Although Babe Craig missed the Arkansas game with an injured back, he still holds the No. 1 punt ing spot in the conference. His average is 41.4 and his nearest contender is Robert Turner of Texas Tech with 39.7 yards per kick. Byer Leads Scoring In scoring Byer is leading the Aggies’ column with 18 points fol lowed by Craig with 14 points. All of Byer’s tallies have come on touchdowns while Craig has two TD’s and a two-point PAT. Randy Sims is the leading punt returner for the Cadets as well as in the SWC. He has run seven back for 124 yards which boosts his average to 17.7. J Intramurals Intramural sports provided sev eral close games yesterday. In Class A basketball, F-2 beat E-l, 22-18; A-2 swept past Sq. 13, 18-11; M-2 whipped B-2, 25-20; Sq. 11 edged H-l, 33-32; K-2 clob bered B-l, 36-4; and E-2 won over L-2, 23-21. F-l edged L-2, 2-1; and Sq. 9 won over Sq. 1 by forfeit in the only games scheduled in Class B horseshoes.
