THE BATTALION
Cadet Freshmen Remain Idle;
Statistics Look Impressive
SPORTS
By LARRY SMITH
Assistant Sports Editor
After two games the Aggie
Fish have placed some pretty re
spectable figures in the statistic
column as they remain idle this
week.
In their first game with the
TCU Wogs, who won 12-0, the
Fish failed to get going good after
being stopped on two drives by
penalties. Against the Baylor
Cubs last week, the Fish really
showed their stuff by scoring 17
points in the first half and fight
ing off the Cubs in the second

AP Picker Has Good Week
Misses Only 13 of 50
By HAROLD CLASSEN
Associated Press Sports Writer
NEW YORK—If Casey Stengel
gets bounced after winning 10
pennants in 12 years, what hap
pens to a pigskin picker who
misses on 13 of 50 college games?
That’s an average of .740 for the
week and pulls the seasonal fig
ures to .733.
This week’s picks:
Iowa over Purdue: Two sopho-
moric teams that have jelled
quickly. There is less pressure on
the Boilermaker youngsters so
they may pull another upset, but
the lowans will be playing at
home and that will give them a
thin edge.
Mississippi over Arkansas: An
interleague game on a neutral
field, hut Jake Gibbs makes the
Rebels a touchdown better.
Syracuse over West Virginia:
Those Mountaineers completely
out of juice this year.
Navy over Penn: There are few
backs in the country better than
the Middies’ Joe Bellino.
Missouri over Iowa State: Mel
West has too many helpers for
the Cyclones.
Michigan over Minnesota: The
Wolverines will build up their lead
during the first three quarters.
Baylor over A&M: The Baylors
are using some of the Baltimore
Colt plays—and with good suc
cess. Ronnie Bull to do the scor
ing.
Washington over Oregon State:
It will be close with Bob Schloredt
on the sidelines with a broken
collarbone, but the Huskies should
win.
Ohio State over Wisconsin: Two
angry, defeated Big Ten clubs
take it out on each other. The
Buckeyes to Wear down the Bad
gers.
Tennessee over Chattanooga:
They play in different leagues.

A definite trend toward more
passing is reflected in the highs
of the season in Southwest Con
ference football.
Of 14 set last week five of them
came from throwing the ball. Two
others were concerned directly
with passing.
Rice completed the most passes
in a game by connectin'g on 14
against Southern Methodist. Rice
also set a team high in yards
gained passing with 225 yards.
Guy Gibbs of Texas Christian
hurled the most passes by an in
dividual when he flung 20 against
A&M. He also completed the most
when he connected on 11.
Buddy lies of Texas Christian
tied for the most passes caught
when he snared six against A&M.
Highs also were set in pass in
terceptions. Texas Tech picked
off four against Baylor for a team
tied for the most intercepted in
one game when he grabbed off
two.
A&M averaged 51.3 yards for
the team high in punting for the
season. The Aggies also ran 59
rushing plays to tie the season’s
high.
Southern Methodist and Arkan
sas tied for the season high in
kickoff returns when each took
six. Arkansas gained 109 yards
and Southern Methodist 85.
Babe Craig of the Aggies had
the longest punt of the year—a
mighty 75 yards against Texas
Christian.
Billy Polk of Southern Method
ist tied for the most kickoff re
turns when he took back four for
50 yards against Rice.
Ronnie Bull of Baylor and Butch
Blume of Rice tied for the most
touchdowns in a game with two
each.
Blume set a season high for
high and Glen Amerson of Tech most points scored with 14.
half while the wind and rains
came. The final score of this
contest was 17-6.
Hargett Leads Rushers
George Hargett, the 165-pound
halfback from Linden-Kildare,
leads the Fish in rushing with 11
carries for 135 yards and a re
markable average of 12.3. Jerry
Rogers, the bruising fullback from
Corpus Christi, is close behind
with 29 carries for 117 yards and
net yardage gained of 115 yards
for a 3.9 average. Travis Reagan,
the speed merchant from Wichita
Falls who was slightly injured in
the Cub game, is in third place
with six carries for 41 yards and
an average of 6.7.
Quarterback Jim Linnstaedter,
the all-around boy from Brenham,
leads in the passing department
with 9 attempts and 3 completions
for 56 yards. In second place is
Eddie Hall, from Dickinson with
2 for 3 and 20 yards.
In the receiving department,
Phil Peter, the tall, rangy half
back from Houston (Austin), leads
with one grab for 38 yards. Har
gett is right behind with 2 catches
for 19 yards.
Hargett, who leads four differ
ent departments, is the leading
scorer with 11 points, followed
closely by Peter with 6 points.
Punting Gets Workout
The department which really got
a treatment in the Baylor game
was punting. The Fish punted
on first down almost every time
in the second half of that contest.
Hall is the leader with 13 kicks
for 423 yeards and a 32.5 average.
Punt returns is another one
that Hargett calls his. He leads
with 6 returns for 112 yards and
a good 18.7 average.
Reagan is the head man in
kickoff returns with two returns
for 46 yards and a 23.0 average.
Hargett and Peter each have re
turned one for 21 yards.
Next Thursday, here in College
Station, the Fish take on the ever
tough Houston Kittens. Last sea
son the Fish defeated the Kittens,
20-6 in their only win of the year.
These statistical figures are of
ficial through the first two Fish
games.
Rebels Nation’s
Rushing Leader
By The Associated Press
The Mississippi Rebels, oppon
ents known, are a tough defensive
outfit. And statistics backed
them up today as records of the
NCAA Service Bureau disclosed
that Ole Miss finally has dis
lodged Syracuse as the country’s
leader in rushing defense.
The Rebels’ consistency is un
matched in recent major college
football records, with Mississippi
among the top 10 in one of the
four principal defense categories
every week since the start of the
1956 season.
Syracuse, leader in rushing de
fense for more than a year, now
holds only one first—a bare de
cision in total defense over Wyo
ming.
Intramurals
The cold front that hit Aggie-
land yesterday' didn5t stop the
Aggies from going full speed in
the inntramural sports.
The most popular sport was in
Class B horseshoes, in which five
games were played.
In horseshoes, Sq. 11 blanked
A-2, 3-0; Sq. 14 beat L-2 by the
same score, 3-0; Sq. 7 also blanked
Sq. 8, 3-0; G-3 edged E-2, 2-1;
and A-l out-pitched Sq. 17, 2-1.
In Class B football, G-2, with
help of the two-point conversion,
beat Sq. 2, 8-6 and Sq. 3 ran over
B-l, 18-0.
In Class A basketball, Sq. 2
outscored D-l, 36-28.
