Junior Class Captures First
In Consolidated Sports Day
By RUSSELL BROWN
CHS Correspondent
With a surge to place first, sec-
and fourth in the final event,
‘ A&M Consolidated’s junior class
^copped the annual Sports Day Fri
day in connection with the annual
spring elections.
On top by a meager Ms point
Irith boys’ sit-ups and the mile
licycle -race remaining, the Class
of ’61 outpointed the fish in the
sit-ups and then sat back and
watched Bob Adams, John Pedigo
and George Outlaw capture places
, in the open event to garner the
top spot.
The freshmen had a wide mar
gin over their opponents in first
places, but the placing power of
the juniors gave them the victory.
The sophomores were able to get
♦only one first place in the 34-event
| field as the sophs brought up the
! rear. The juniors had 116 2/5
points to the freshmen’s 106 7/10
while the seniors took third with
95% and the sophs managed only
45% tallies.
The seniors, paced by District
21-AA track man Dee Smith,
jumped off to a quick margin in
the high jump and broad jump.
Boys’ push-ups and bottle sucking
nudged the juniors into the lead
they never lost.
The seniors picked up the big
gest sweep of the day with a nine
point total in the mile run, though
minus State Miler Bruce Thomp
son who is slated to run Friday in
Austin. The juniors took a nine-
point play in the bicycle race, with
the freshmen doing likewise in
girls’ softball throw.
Besides the usual track and field

A&M Plays Host To Baylor
In Pair Of Weekend Contests
A&M’s baseball team entertains
the Baylor Bears in a pair of
games on Kyle Field this week
end that will round out the home
season for the Cadets.
In the first meeting of the two
teams this year, the Ags were
downed by the Bruins, 7-5.
Bears Improved
Tuesday the Bears knocked Rice
from an undisputed second place
as they won, 5-4, in 13 innings.
While the Bears have been fin
ishing strong the Ags have won
only one conference game and tha1
was against Southern Methodisl
in the conference opener.
Olen Jordan, who got credit for
the Cadet’s lone win, is tabbed for
starting duties in Friday’s game.
Dallas Fans Gel
Game Each Week
By HAROLD V. RATLIFF
Associated Press Sports Writer
Dallas football fans won’t have
to leave town to see at least one
game each week except in one in
stance next fall.
The Cotton Bowl turf never be
fore will have taken such a beat
ing. Over a period of five months
22 games will be played there. The
State Fair of Texas, which gets
15 per cent rental, should make
enough to retire about every bond.
New Leagues
The reason for so much football
is the formation of the American
Football League and the moving
in of a club in the National Foot
ball League.
The Dallas Texans are the AFL
entry. The Dallas Cowboys rep
resent the NFL.
The first game on the schedule
is Aug. 5 when the all-tars of the
Texas Coaching School have at it
in the big saucer. Aug. 19 the
Cowboys play the Baltimore Colts
in an exhibition and Sept 2 the
Texans engage the Houston Oilers
of the AFL. There is a three week
skip until the next game—Dallas
Cowboys vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
Sept. 24. From then on, except
for one week in October, there will
be at least one game each week.
There are three Friday games,
seven Saturday and 11 for Sun
day. And there’s also one on Mon
day— the Cotton Bowl classic,
which this time will be on a Mon
day because Jan 1 falls on Sun
day.
Six College Games Slated
Six college games are sandwich
ed in between the numerous pro
fessional contests. The Texas-
Oklahoma game is Oct. 8, South
ern Methodist and Rice play Oct.
15, Southern Methodist and Texas
A&M Nov. 5, Southern Methodist
and Baylor Nov. 19 and Southern
Methodist and Texas Christian
Nov. 26. The Jan. 2 Cotton Bow 1
game will, of course, be between
two colleges but nobody has anj :
idea what colleges they will be and
won’t know until late November.
Intramurals,
A mistake was made last week
in reporting Class A softball semi
finals. Co. A-l defeated Co. F-l
in the semi-finals and went on to
defeat Co. G-2 in the finals by a
3-2 championship win. Billy Gres
sett was the winning pitcher anc
Frank Fitzgerald took the loss for
G-2.
In intramural golf, the Whit'
Band and Sq. 10, and Co. F-l and
Sq. 12 reached the semi-finals.
Pictures of intramural cham
pionship teams will be made in

Besides Jordan’s win he has also
collected three losses for the sea
son.
Either Don Costlow, David Pit-

round duties for the Saturday
ame. Costlow and Pitcock both
nave two losses charged to them.
Hickerson, a converted first sack-
er, has been doing a considerable
amount of relief for the Aggies
and boast the best ERA with a
1.48 and has no losses charged to
aim.
Ag Hitting Weak
Only two regulars are hitting
aver the .300 mark in conference
play for the Cadets. Byron Barber
has a .344 in nine games and in
six games David Pitcock has a
.429. As a team the Farmers are
averaging only .216 in the hitting
department.
Last Home Game for Seniors
Four seniors will be playing
their last home game for the Ca
