Bonorden has thrown 55 feet, just five and a half inches under Hooper’s throw in 1952. etic Year Closes Next Week With State Track Meet By HAROLD V. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer The first sport in which a state meet was held for Texas high schools — track — will be run off next week. It closes the athletic year. Track never has been a good spectator sport and does not pay its way but it is the most firmly entrenched of them all. The reason is that track is so well liked by the individual and is a great developer for football. The first track meet was in 1905 and it was held as an invitational affair by the University of Texas. In 1911 the Interscholastic League was organized but it was for schools closer to Austin or those with sufficient money to make the trip. In 1912 the system of rebates was installed and then it became a state meet in the truest sense. Beaumont won the first state meet with 45 points and a lad named Maxon scored 26 points, meaning he won five first places. In 1912 Maxon again was the high point man. He got 31 points this time. Back in the early years of the meet it was common for one boy to win the championship by him self. Mule Frazier, a track great at Baylor and one of the noted starters in the sport today, made 20 points in 1918 in taking Hills boro to the title. INTRAMURALS The Class B softball champion ship was decided last night in a rain-soaked game as Co. G-2 won a 13-7 ball game from Co. A-l. Co. A-l had previously beat Co. A-2 for their finals position and Lo. G-2 had defeated Sq. 2. In Class B tennis two final jerths were decided as Co. A-l won their match from Co. G-2 and Sq. 2 was victorious over Sq. 3. In the only intramural golf match played today Sq. 2 downed Co. D-2. Two finals matches are left to be played. They are in upperclass men softball and freshman tennis. Council headed home today after slapping Indiana University with one of the stiffest penalties on record—four years probation for six recruiting violations. “It’s a terrible blow” said Uni versity President Herman B. Wells at Bloomington, Ind. Phil Dickens, Indiana football coach, called it “a dad-burned shame. We thought we had done everything possible to avert any thing like this.” The punishment means Indiana is ineligible for NCAA champion ship competition, cannot make postseason appearances such as bowl games and cannot appear on television sports programs of the NCAA. The Council, NCAA policy-mak ing body, charged that an $800 bonns and monthly payments of $50 to $75 were offered a Virginia football player by an Indiana alumnus working with an assist ant coach. One of the greatest one-man feats was in 1924 when Leo Bald win of Wichita Falls won four first places and a second, setting three records. His 23 points Were all Wichita Falls got but they won the meet. In 1946 a new scoring system was installed—first place counted 10 points instead of five. Ken Hall of Sugar Land rolled up 38 points in 1952 to set the individual record. But under this system Maxon would have scored 50 points in 1912, Baldwin would have made 48 and Frazier would have racked up 40. 50-Yard Dash There once was a 50-yard dash in the state meet. It was discon tinued in 1924. H. Walton of Bronte holds the record. He did the event in 5.2 seconds in 1922. In those days a runner was set back for jumping the gun instead of being disqualified. It wasn’t unusual to see a boy set back two yards. A handicap of two yards would be monumental in a 50-yard run. There once was a javelin throw but it, too, was discontinued. Not until Matthew Batts of San An tonio Tech set an impressive rec ord in 1940. He threw the spear 201 feet dVz inches. That’s a good javeljn throw now. They also once ran the 120-yard low hurdles. Earl Wilson of Dallas Forest set the record of 14.2 in 1920. The event was turned into the 120-yard high hurdles in 1922 and in 1947 Lee Miller of San An tonio Burbank ran it in faster time than the boys had run the 120-yard low hurdles. He did it in 14.0. There also once was a hammer throw bpt it lasted only until 1916. The record was 162 feet 2 inches, set in 1912 by Stieler of Marshall Training School. In those days there were two divisions of the state meet—high school and acad emy. THE BATTALION Thursday, April 28, 1960 College Station, Texas Page 5 Future Ag Athlete Becomes One of Feiv To Win Sixteen Letters in High School One of A&M’s future athletes has become one of the few high school athletes to win 16 letters in four major sports. The big letter winner is Jim Linnstaedter of Brenham who re cently was named a baseball letter- man at Brenham High School by its athletic director, Tommy Mims. Linnstaedter is a 175-pound All- America and All-State football It takes two to fill the bill TWO BY TWO CLASS For Aggies and Aggie Wives First Baptist Church College Station player and is currently hitting a .555 clip on the baseball diamond. He has pitched his team to 11 victories this season against only three defeats. In district baseball competition Linnstaedter has a 3-1 record. As a freshman, in 196-57, Linn staedter won four letters and re- aaMSNV 1QDH peated his feat every year since. He is the first athlete from Bren- ham’s history to achieve such a feat.
