Page G College Station, Texas Thursday, April 21, 1960 THE BATTALION Frosh Seek Eighth Triumph Today Against Allen Ramblers The freshmen baseball team will be trying for their eighth win today when they tangle with the Allen Academy Ramblers on Kyle Field. Coach Gary Herrington has guided his Fish to a winning sea son, falling only to the Texas University freshmen. The Fish have only three games left and will have a chance to even the score with the Shorthorns in the season final. After today’s Allen game they will meet Wharton Junior College in College Station April 29, Baylor in Waco May 7 and end the season with Texas May 14, in College i Station. In the seven wins the Fish have chalked up this season they have only been threatened seriously once. In their opener with Navarro Junior College they only mustered a 1-0 victory, but since the wins have been by a considerable margin. The first meeting with Allen Academy this year the Frosh racked up a 5-4 win over the Ramblers. Bill Musemeche, a Houston slug ger, is holding down the batting lead with a .457. Musemeche has hit safely 16 out of 35 trips to the plate, which includes six doubles and a homer. Jerry Carter, second sacker, is giving Musemeche a close race with his .448 batting average. Jerry Warren fields the largest total in games won from the mound with his four wins and no losses. Football Team Scores 748 Points—Has Losing Season By HAROLD V. RATLIFF Associated Press Sports Writer Ever hear of a football team scoring 748 points but losing 4 games out of 15? It happened 30 years ago and it was at Spur, a town of 2,000 near Lubbock in the plains country. That was a truly great high school team. The only games it lost were to the Texas Tech varsity and larger schools like Pampa, Cisco—and Slaton. It beat Slaton 40-0 in early sea son but one of the Spur players was found to be over age and the victory was forfeited. The teams met again on a neutral field and Slaton won 27-6 that time. The team didn’t win its district championship but it certainly had an awesome scoring record. Just once was it surpassed. Waco in 1927 won 14 games and lost none, rolling up 784 points to 33. That was the team that claimed the national championship when it walloped Latin High of Cleveland in a post-season game. That was the highest scoring team in Texas football history but Spur was next. Coach of Spur was the late Gene Taylor, who played his college football at Texas Christian. When he coached Spur the school had only 140 enrollment but 40 of the students were football players. Spur of 1930 beat Lorenzo 186-0, CHS Tigers Hit Comeback Trail NOT SPORTING MUNCIE, Ind. (A?)—The end of the high school basketball season came just in time for a local judge. A divorced couple agreed on di viding all their property—except a couple of season tickets to Mun- cie Central’s basketball games. They didn’t want to sit next to each other. Ed Singley has pitched 10 more innings than any of the Fish pitchers and boasts a .72 ERA, but has only chalked up two wins com pared to one loss. Singley fanned 13 batters in his last outing against Tarleton State Tuesday and ran up his total for the season to 37, which is also 10 more than any pitcher has recorded. LIKES ROLL-YOUR-OWNS TULSA, Okla. VP)—Dr. Elmer F. Ferneau, head of the University of Tulsa education department, rolls his owm cigarettes western style. Says they don’t bother his sinuses. By RUSSELL BROWN CHS Correspondent The A&M Consolidated Tigers appear to be on the comeback trail after a miserable start as the Ben- gals have taken three of their last four tilts to bring their season mark to 5-7. After dropping their sixth de cision to' Crockett, the Bengals re bounded with a 10-5 win over the Hearne Eagles with Vic Clark be ginning to round in shape with a five-hitter. The Tigers had to go eight frames against the Taylor Ducks but used fourteen walks and Clark’s superb hurling to take a 7-2 tilt from the hosts before the Hearne Eagles retaliated Mon day with a 13-2 scalping of the Bengals. The Bengals picked up their first District 21-AA contest at the expense of the Bellville Brahmas Tuesday with Clark again picking up the win, setting his season rec ord a 5-4. The fireballing right hander gave up only three hits over the seven-inning route, walk ing five and whiffing 13 big Brahmas. The big blow came in the fifth frame when Bill Haley broke the 2-2 ball game wide open with a two-run blast into left-cen ter. With the first win under their belts, the Tigers continue their District 2-AA activity Friday when they travel to Navasota be fore meeting the Cy-Fair Bobcats in Houston Tuesday. First baseman Ben Jackson leads the hitting parade with 10 hits in 28 plate appearances for a .357 average. Jackson has three doubles and a homer to his credit. Johnny Williams holds down the second spot with 13 safties in 39 at bats 1 for a .333 average, blasting out three doubles and .a single. Haley is third with .282, including two doubles and a homerun; and Rus sell Welch has .273, to complete the list of leaders. Both Haley and Jackson have driven across 10 runs while Clark and Williams each have one triple. Estelline 142-0 and Post 91-0. Waco of 1927 also had a couple of high scoring games but not like Spur’s. Waco beat Marlin 107-0 and Jeff Davis of Houston 124-0. The team was big and fast and Taylor would use about 33 boys per game, obviously following Knute Rockne’s “shock troop” plan that came along about that time. It used the onside kick to get the ball almost every time it had to kick off to start a game. Then it would smashfdike a steamroller to a touchdown and have the opposi tion softened up before it knew it was in a ball game. When the regular season was over, Spur played the Post All- Stars and beat ’em 26-0. Then it walloped the Hardin-Simmons Uni versity freshmen 40-12. Spur Falls to Tech It finally bit off a little bit more than it could chew—it played Texas Tech varsity and got licked 72-6. Tanner Laine, a Lubbock news paperman who played on the team, shudder a little as he talked about that Texas Tech melee. “I can still feel how hand that Tech varsity hit us—they taught us a lesson for an upstart high school,” he recalled. “But we scored on ’em by golly and gave them a moment or two.” State Farm Saved Texans Money We aim to insure careful drivers only.
