Aggies Most Sice, Saylor in Triangle
Track, Field Competition on Kyle Field
A&M, Rice and Baylor compete
in a triangular track and field
meet on Kyle field here Friday
afternoon in what is rapidly shap
ing up as one of the closest of the
season.
The meet was moved'up from
Saturday because of the inaugura
tion of A&M President Earl
Rudder.
Friday’s meet gets -under way at
2 p.m. (field events) with the first
running event at 2:30. Rice and
Baylor also will compete in dual
freshman division but Aggie Fish
will not run because of the South
west Conference limitation of five
frosh meets per year.
Rice, Baylor Surprise
Both Baylor and Rice were sur
prising on different fronts last
week, the Owls upsetting LSU and
A&M in a 3-way . meet at Houston
and Baylor coming in second be
hind Southern California at
Odessa.
The Bears are strong in the
sprints, weights, javelin, high
jump, mile, sprint relay and high
hurdles while Rice is particularly
strong in the dashes, both relays,
440 and broad jump.
A&M is expected to win the half-
mile and to contest Baylor in the
weights and javelin.
On the basis of best marks this
spring Baylor should edge out Rice
and A&M but if any one performer
falters any of the three schools
could take the. meet. It’s that close.
Jones Doubtful
Biggest question mark is the
condition of Rice’s stellar sopho
more, Taylor Jones, ace sprinter
who pulled a muscle in the South
west Conference meet here last
May and who ran a surprisingly
good :48.6 quarter to win at Hous
ton last week. Should Jones enter
the sprints he will get the nod over
Baylor’s Billy Hollis, who has
turned :9.6 several times this year.
All top three shot putters —
Baylor’s John Fry and Buddy
Tyner and Henry Bonorden of
A&M turned in career bests last
Saturday.
Bonorden tossed the put 54 feet,
9% inches at Houston last week
while Friday and Tyner had marks,
respectively, of 53-7y2 and 53-2y 2 .
Tyner and A&M’s Owen Hill,
winner of the SWC discus throw
last spring, will challenge in the
discus, and A&M’s Newton Lamb
and Baylor’s Gary Wisener should
have a torrid battle in the javelin.

Listed below are the favorites
in each event with year’s best
marks.

head, Rice 9.9; Tommy Minter,
Baylor 9.8.
