THE BATTALION
Everybody Watches
The whole Arkansas team gets a bird’s eye Clyde Rhoden, the Hogs leading scorer,

Invade Mustangs’ Hardwood Tonight
By JOE CALUCOATTE
Battalion Sports Editor
Bob Rogers will be sporting five
aces tonight when he calls Doc
Hayes’ hand with a full house at
Dallas.
If Rogers doesn’t play his hand
right, a full house could beat five
aces in probably the most import
ant showdown of the year for
Rogers’ Cadets.
After Saturday’s Victory over
the Razorbacks the Aggies are sit
ting on a 17-3 record to lead the
conference for the season, but only
hold a third share of the SWC
lead.
In the Arkansas game five of
the Cadets jumped into the double
scoring figure. Wayne Lawrence
had the most tallies with 18.
Lawrence was followed by Kelly
Chapman who jumped in 16 points.

Theme of Optimism Chosen
For Gridders After a Week
Cautious optimism is the theme
after a week of spring football
practice at A&M.
Coach Jim Myers has a mixture
of experienced lettermen, and high
ly-regarded newcomers for his
1960 varsity team next fall. Chief
cause of concern during the spring j
drills is an adequate quarterback-
leader of the calibre of Charley
Milstead who completed his col
legiate eligibility last fall.
Myers is well-pleased with the
progress after five days of work
outs and cited the improvements
of his quarterback candidates but
observed that his signal callers
have a long way to go.
By the time the 1960 season rolls
around the Aggies will have 17
lettermen plus a bevy of fine pros
pects off last fall’s freshman team.
Included in the returning letter-
men are three who are not out
this spring—Backs Randy Sims of
Houston and Jim Murphy of El
Reno, Okla. and End Richard Love
of Lampasas. Sims is not in school
this semester while Love and Mur
phy were injured in off-season
mishaps. All will be on the squad
next fall.
Currently the Aggies’ top two
teams are predominately veterans
with a sprinkling of sophs-to-be
breaking into the lineups on oc
casion. Among the first year men
showing up well are Linemen John
Stradinger and Keith Huggins,
both of Houston; George Hogan
of Longview, Jerry Hopkins of
Mart, Jim Phillips of Freeport,
Jim Walton of Dumas and Jim
Harper of Borger and Backs Lee-

Brice is one of three quarter
back candidates working under the
tutelage of Billy Wade, pro star
with the L. A. Rams, who is help
ing the Aggies for spring training.
Powell Berry, two-year letter-
man from Snyder, and Daryle
Keeling, squadman from Tyler,
were running at quarterback with
Brice during the first week of
drills. These three are ahead of
several other hopefuls.
Two position changes have been
made to date. Jack Estes of Ol-
ton, letterman end, and Wayne
Freiling, letterman guard from
San Antonio, have been switched
to halfback and tackle, respective
ly.

their careers last fall are helping
the Aggie staff. They are Mil-

fugio, Bill Godwin of Orangefield,

his jump shots as he dropped in
seven field goals on 10 attempts.
Also Chapman didn’t enter the
game until two minutes deep in
the second half.
Carroll Broussard had 14 points
for the Cadets and broke an eight
year scoring record held by Buddy
Davis for the most points scored
in one season. The old record was
363 and Broussard tossed in the
record breaking point with 15:26
to play.
The other two Aggies in the top
scoring figure was Don Stanley
and Wilmer Cox with 13 each.
When the Ags meet the Mus
tangs they will be seeking revenge
from the two point victory scored
by the Ponies in College Station.
SMU is fresh from fat win from
the hapless TCU frogs and will
be up for the contest on their home
court.
They will he sparked by Steve
Strange who tossed in 34 points
in his last encounter with Aggies.
Also a constant thorn in any
team’s side is SMU’s ballhawk,
Max Williams.
Whoever loses the contest will
drop from the top ranks in the
conference and the winner will
either be in an undisputed first
place position or be tied with Tex
as if they can manage to whip
Baylor in Austin.
In case of a tie there will be a
play-off game that will be played
on a neutral court.
