Main TA 2-1941 Bryan Atomic Research Awards Planned For Summer Work AMARILLO, Tex.—Six research fellowships in atomic energy for graduate students in Texas col leges and universities will be awarded this summer by the Tex as Atomic Energy Research Foun dation and the General Atomic Di vision of General Dynamics Corp., it was announced today by J. E. Cunningham, president of the foundation. The foundation is composed of 11 investor-owned electric utility com panies operating in Texas. The recipients of the six re search fellowships will work under the direction of General Atomic scientists on the controlled nuclear fusion research program being jointly sponsored by General Atomic and the Texas Atomic Re search Foundation at the John Jay Hopkins Laboratory for Pure and Applied Science at San Diego, Calif. The students will assist in the oretical and experimental research in controlled thermonuclear energy as part of the world’s first and largest privately-financed program in the use of nuclear fusion for the generation of power and en ergy. Nuclear fusion is the proc ess responsible for the tremendous power of the hydrogen bomb and the energy of the sun and stars. This research may eventually lead to the harnessing of the might of the hydrogen bomb for peace ful purposes, including the gen eration of electric power. The recipients of the six fellow ships will be announced April 1 by a selection committee composed of representatives from Texas educa tional institutions. General Atomic and the Texas Atomic Energy Re search Foundation. The students will be selected if possible, from different colleges, but there is no limit on the number of applica tions which may be filed from any one college. In order to he considered for a fellowship, a student must intend to continue further studies in a Texas college or university. Recipients of the fellowships will be paid a stipend while working at the General Atomic Laboratory. In announcing the summer re search program, Cunningham de clared, “One of the purposes of the Texas Atomic Energy Research Foundation is to aid and foster scientific knowledge in Texas and we feel that these fellowships will serve this purpose by bringing into the state some of the knowledge and experience being developed by scientists at General Atomic.” 11,845 Visit A&M In Eight Months A total of 11,845 visitors were on the campus of A&M for the months of June, July, August, September, October, November, December and January, P.
