Two Students Win Awards
A&M Agronomy Students Dale R. Darling,
left, of Bryan, and Franklin G. Lange, cen
ter, of Bartlett, each receive $200 scholar
ships from the Trans-Mississippi Golf Assn.
Presenting the awards in behalf of the T-
MGA is Dr. Marvin H. Ferguson, mid-coastal
director of the U. S. Golf Assn., Green Sec
tion. The scholarships are given each year
to outstanding agronomy students interest-,
ed in turf production and management.
This year’s presentation was Darling’s
second time to win the scholarship.
Tilden Was Named Dog Town
TILDEN, Tex. (/P>Dogs outnum
bered cowboys 10 to 1 in the old
days when this town was known as
Dog Town.
After the presidential election
of 1876 the name of the town was
changed to Tilden but people still
called it Dog Town.
The town was settled by a few
pioneer ranchers who built homes
in a bend of the Frio as protection
against Mexican bandits and plun
dering Comanches. An enterprising
merchant moved in with a few
groceries set up a little bar and
established the town’s first store.
thieves and gamblers who was at
a loss for excitement. He bet a
friend that he could shoot the hat
off a drunk slumbering beneath
a mesquite in front of a store.
The bullet was low and while
no one particularly mourned the
death of the sleeping man, they
did deplore the work necessary
to bury him.
Old timers, wishing to prevent
the town from getting a bad name,
organized the Dog Town Vigilance
Committee and one morning passed
the word that thieves, gamblers
and bums were no lopger welcome.

In 1920 the discovery of oil gave
a boost to the county’s finances,
and it was about that time that
the present courthouse was built.
LOS ANGELES (TPl—Jack Cody,
a coarse, cocky con man who
claims he was hired to kill, faced
another seige by the cross-examin
er in the Finch murder trial today
as it became evident the defense
wjll contend:
1. That Cody was hired to en
trap Barbara Jean Finch roman-
ticafly* not to murder her.
2. That Dr. E. Bernard Finch
was not armed when he went to
see his wife the night of her
death, and that he killed her by
accident or in self defense.
Finch, wealthy 42-year-old sur
geon, is on trial with his pretty
mistress, Carole Tregoff, 28. They
are accused of murder in the July
18 gunshot death of Mrs. Finch,
36. She was slain outside her
suburban home.
Cody, brought here to testify
from the Minneapolis workhouse,
insisted again Wednesday under
cross-examination that the doctor
and Miss Tregoff paid him $1,400
to do away with Mrs. Finch, and
that he had no intention of going
through with it. But he was more
vague about his purported con
versations with Miss Tregoff than
he had been under examination by
the prosecution.
Then later he said: “I didn’t
know nothing about the murder
until I talked to Carole.”

According to legend the local

letters on the floor of the post
office and shout: “There’s your
