THE BATTALION Friday, January 15, 1960 PAGE 5 Consolidated Tops Cameron, 47 - 39 By RUSSELL BROWN CHS Correspondent Consolidated Tigers chalked up their ninth win of the season Fri day night as they topped the Cam eron Yoemen, 47-39, in a non-dis trict contest. The Tigers had to come from be hind, Aggie style, as the Maroon and White was down 7-0 before Smith and Kelly Parker, 5-10 sen ior squadman put the Bengals in front 13-7. Leading 15-10 at the quarter, the Bengals saw the lead dissolve at Dwayne Jergens’ two free tosses gave the foe a shoi't- lived 24-23 lead in the second stanza. Bruce Thompson’s layup with the buzzer gave the Bengals a 25-24 halftime lead. The Tiger defense came into its own, holding Barkemeyer and com pany to only two field goals in the final 16 minutes of play. The Yoe hit 11 free tosses to keep things close and interesting but the ball-hawking Bengals just had too much and too many on the ball. In the “B” tilt the subs came through in fine style as Bob Adams’ sparkling offensive and defensive work in a 30-point, sec ond quarter, gave the bengals a bench-clearing 53-30 tally. Trail ing 6-5 at the quarter, Adams and Harris Marshall ball-hawked the Bengals to a 30-3 quarter as the Bengals took intermission with a comfortable 35-9 margin. Paced by the freshman club and new transfer student, Ohio-bred David Remge, the Bengals contin ued the slaughter in the final per iods with 42-14 and 53-30 stanza leads. Adams led the scoring parade with 17 points while Larry Ran dolph of the Tigers and Dan Bra- shear of the Yoe each had eight points. The Tigers engage the Caldwell Hornets in Tiger Gym Friday night at 5 before opening District 21- AA action Tuesday against the Bellville Brahmas at home. Myers Chooses Ellis As Assistant Coach SCIENTISTS GO, GO, GO NEW PROVIDENCE, N. J. OS’) — When scientists at the Bell La boratories here invite you to “Go,” they’re not being rude. An ancient Oriental game called “Go” has become the top diversion for the space-age scientist. It’s a test of mental strategy. Tom Ellis, 35-year ©Id head foot ball coach at McMurry College, Abi lene, has been named assistant coach at Texas A&M by Jim My ers, director of athletics. Ellis, father of three childi’en, will work with the backs on Myers Aggie staff. A native of Cleveland, Tenn., where he played at Bradley high school, Ellis played his collegiate ball at McMurry in the seasons of 1942, 1946 and 1947. Following graduation he was an assistant coach at Winters high school for two years and Prom 1950 through the 1954 seasons was line coach and head basketball coach at Merkel high school. Western Division Pro Bowl Favorite Annett Drives Towards Goal Wayne Annett, the 6-0 junior college transfer, is fourth in Aggie scoring in Southwest Conference play, with a 10.6 point per game average. The speedy guard has also col lected a total of 32 rebounds in league play. LOS ANGELES (^^-Surpris ingly, Coach Red Hickey doesn’t mind that his Western Division team is favored by 3% points in the pro bowl football game Sun day. And to really make a radical departure from the coach’s pessi mistic tradition, he adds: “We love to be the favorite in any game. “The fellows who make the odds know what they’re doing. I hope they’re right again this time.” Hickey was asked Thursday to give his analysis of the game. “The Pro Bowl is always a pass ing duel,” he replied. “The team that gives its passers the better protection will win.” The San Francisco coach, affil iated as a player and coach with the Los Angeles Rams, also noted he will have another advantage. “I am well acquainted with the personnel of the other club,” Hick ey said. “Half of them came from the Rams.” The East squad is sprinkled with Ram castoffs who have made good with other teams, notably quarter back Norm Van Brocklin, tackles Frank Fuller and Ken Panfil, de fensive end Andy Robustelli, half back Jimmy Orr and defensive halfback Dean Derby. East Coach Buck Shaw of the Philadelphia Eagles says he plans to loosen up the West defense with passes by Van Brocklin and Bobby Layne and then shoot fullback Jimmy Brown up the middle. Shaw said he’s impressed by his squad’s enthusiasm. “It is amazing,” he reflected, “what a pro football player will do for 200 bucks.” The winners will get $800 apiece, the losers $200 less. A crowd of more than 50,000 is expected to see the 10th annual pro classic in Memorial Coliseum. The contest will be televised na tionally by NBC, with the Los Angeles area blacked out.
