The A&M basketball team, un
defeated in four intei-sectional
games, get a chance to sit back
and rest on their laurels this week
before they pack their bags and
move to Houston Thursday night
where they have a date with a
revenge - minded University of
Houston five.
Coach Bob Rogers’ boys have
showed the Southwest Conference
that a goal saved is a goal un
made, holding their bevy of four
opponents to a meager 44 points
per game average. On the other
hand, the Aggies have been any
thing but'the genial host, scoring
an average of 80 points per game
. . . which makes an average of
36 points per game difference
between them and their foes.
The Aggies haven’t been stingy
with each other, either, in shoot
ing opportunities. Carroll Brous
sard is the top gunner on the
team, but there’s only 25 points
separating him from the eighth
ranked man on the team.
Broussard, the talented sopho
more with a knack for everything
in the way of basketball, is aver
aging 13.2 points per game and
shooting at a .442 clip from the
floor. He’s also second in total re
bounds with 36. Free throws
doesn’t seem to be his specialty,
though since he’s ranked fifth in
accuracy on the team with a .625
percentage from the cii’cle.
Lanky Wayne Lawrence, the 6-7
senior who was picked on Time
Magazine’s All-Sectional team, is
the leading rebounder with 38 to
his credit. Lawrence is third in
scoring with a 10.2 average and a
shooting percentage of .405.
Kelly Chapman, who earned his
first starting assignment of the
year Friday night against Mid
western, is second in scoring with
a 12.2 average and a .471 shooting
percentage. Chapman has 27 re
bounds and is third in that de
partment.
Elliot Craig, one of the top
eight men on the team, is the
most accurate shooter on the
squad, batting an even .647 from
the floor and a .1000 percentage
from the free throw line. Craig
has a total of 28 points in four
outings.
Broussard holds the individual
record of most points per game
this season, 17 against Midwest
ern, while Lawrence is to top re
bounder for any one game, with
14 against the University of
Houston.
Houston will be the last team
the Aggies will meet before they
move to Houston and the South
west Conference pre-season tour
nament scheduled for Dec. 28-30.
The tournament will be the first
time the teams will have a chance
to get together and compare notes.
The Aggies were winners of the
SWC Tournament last year, their
first in the history of the school,
and are rated as co-favorites to
win the event again this year along
with SMU and Arkansas.
No real action should be seen
until the second round when the
winner of the SMU-Texas Tech
g - ame meets the winner of the
Arkansas-Baylor game in the
second round action. SMU and
Arkansas should be the two teams
tangling.
The Farmers aren’t expected to
have too tough a time getting to
the finals, meeting weak TCU in
the first game and the winner of
the Rice-Texas game in the second.
It has been a tradition in the
conference, in years gone past,
that the winner of the tourney
was automatically jinxed as far
as pennant hopes are concerned.
The Aggies won the tourney last
year, but finished in a tie for fifth
in the conference race. They have
hopes of winning both and bursting
the jinx this year.

‘Serving Texas Aggies’
Wayne Lawrence
Lawrence, recently selected on Time Magazine’s All-Sect
ional team, is the Aggies leading rebounder with 38 to his
credit and third in scoring with an average of 10.2 points
per game.
Ags Dump Indians,
70-43, Friday Night
Carroll Broussard dunked 17
points Friday night in White Coli
seum to pace the A&M basketball
team to a 70-43 victory over the
Midwestern Indians, an independ
ent College from Wichita Falls.
The Aggies had a tough time
in getting going against the Red
skins, and didn’t begin to pull
away from their opponents until
late in the first period.
Midwestern had only one chance
to lead the Aggies, and that was
at the start of the game when
Bob Myers tied the score up for
Midwestern at two-all, and then
missed a free throw on a foul by
Kelly Chapman.
The largest margin the Farmers
could pile up in the first half was
a 32 point lead with less than one
minute remaining in the game.
In the first half the Aggies hit
43.7 of their field goal attempts
with Broussard and Wayne Law
rence leading the scoring with six
points apiece. Midwestern hit 38.8
per cent of their shots and Don
Shelton was their leading scorer
with five points.
The Aggies roared back in the
second half and scored 14 points
before Midwestern could score a
point. Lawrence scored six of
those points and Broussard seven.
Elliott Craig was the big gun
for the Aggies in the fading mo
ments of the game, scoring six
straight points before the final
horn sounded.
A&M finished the game shoot
ing 42.5 per cent from the floor
while holding the Indians to 35.1
per cent of their field goal tries.
The Aggies out-rebounded Mid
western, 54-41.
