    ublicity May Hurt Syracuse,
'ep Up Texas in Colton Bowl
By HAROLD V. RATLIFF
Lssociated Press Sports Editor
fhile everybody is conceding
Syracuse victory in the Cotton
Biwl, calling the Orangemen a su
per team and looking pityingly at
Texas, this might be just the thing
to bring the Longhorns a triumph.
To hear them tell it, the critics
never before saw such an awesome
football outfit. At the rate they’re
going they’ll have Syracuse built
up into the 'greatest gridiron unit
of all time.
Could Be Overconfident
The Orange is going to start be
lieving it itself. And it might be
right but overconfidence is the

great equalizer of the sport.
Coach Darrell Royal, who shud
dered slightly when he watched
Syracuse clout UCLA on television,
was asked if he thought this gi
gantic buildup might help his team.
“Yes, unless it scares my boys
too much,” he said.
But somehow, it doesn’t seem
probable that the Longhorns will
be frightened the day they march
into the Cotton Bowl to be the
chopping block of the mighty, stu
pendous men of Syracuse. They’ve
gone through a rough and ready
campaign, making dazzling come
backs, coming through when the
chips were do\vn and wading
through a very rugged schedule
to a fine 9-1 record.
Desire Wins Games
At least the big buildup should
make the Longhorns serious about
the work at hand. It is axiomatic
that desire is what wins bowl
games, not necessarily ability. It’s
difficult to get a group of boys
“up” for a post-season game where
there are so many frills and plea
sures.
It would seem that Texas should
be thinking only of football and
how wonderful it would be to knock
over the team that was supposed
to be so far out of its class.

Out at Abilene this week they’ll
pay tribute to the greatest foot
ball organization in the world—the
Texas Interscholastic League.
Just 50 years ago rvas laid the
foundation of this mighty associ
ation of high schools for the pur
pose of promoting athletics. And
it was done in Abilene, which
through the years has won more
football championships than any
other city—six.

but it wasn’t until 1920 that an of
ficial state champion was deter
mined. One effort was made, back
in 1913, but it was a fiasco of in
eligibility charges and rhubarbs.
The most notable unofficial
champions were a couple of Austin
teams coached by Berry Whitaker
in 1913-14. They were fine teams
and obviously should be considered
the best in Texas but since there
w r ere no playoffs and the strongest
teams by sections were not pitted
against each other, these cham
pions can not be recognized.

Texas professional baseball is
shrinking again. The way it now
appears there will be two fewer
teams in the state than last year.
In 1958 there were 13 clubs—
Dallas, ^Houston, and Fort Worth
in the American Association; San
Antonio, Corpus Christi, Victoria,
Amarillo and Austin in the Texas
League, and Midland, San Angelo,
Odessa, Alpine and Plainview in
the Sophomore League.
This year Fort Worth will be
missing and so will Midland and
San Angelo. One has been added.
El Paso will become a member of
the Sophomore League. So 1959
will find only 11 clubs in Texas.
The state still is the nation’s
leader in number of teams but that
goes to show how far back minor
league baseball has gone.
The home stretch at Aqu%luct
race track is a fraction short of
one-quarter mile long. The quarter
pole is at the turn for home.
