THE BATTALION Tuesday, December 8, 1959 PAGE 5 High Aggies Drop Cougars, 67 - 49; Pat Stanley Holds Touted Phillips to 6 Points What appeared to be a wild, rag ing Cougar from Houston turned out to be nothing more than a sas sy cat as the Aggie basketball team humbled the proud University of Houston cagers, 67-49, for their third straight season victory in White Coliseum last night before 3,300 hooting fans. Hero of the night was Pat Stan ley, half of the Stanley twins’ bounce-ball act, who held the Cou gars’ 6-3 Gary Phillips to a meager six points, all of them via the charity toss route. Phillips has gone into the game with a 26 points per game average, but Stanley, putting the pressure on the Houston sharpshooter, played the entire 40 minutes guarding Phillips who saw his shooting average go sliding down Ags Trip Tigers, 36-47, Saturday Friday night the Aggie basket ball team, paced by Kelly Chap man, .romped over the Trinity Ti gers 86-47 before 3,000 fans in White Coliseum. The Aggies jumped off to a quick eight point lead with six minutes gone in the game and were never headed by the die-hard j Tigers. Wilmer Cox was runnerup for! the Farmers in the scoring depart- ' ment, turning in 13 points, his , season high. Chapman scored 17 I to cop high point honors and Pat Stanley scored 12 for third high man on the A&M team. Don Hrebec was high point man for the Tigers with 15 points, fol lowed by Bob Galkowski with 12. Earlier in the season the Tigers had downed A&M’s SWC foe, Rice Institute at Houston. the drain. Kentucky’s contribution to the A&M basketball fortunes, Kelly Chapman, proved to be something of a hero himself, coming out in the second half to score 14 points and lead the Ags to victory. Chap man scored only two points in the first period, hut his production in the second half upped his total to 45 points in three games and a 15 points per game average, the scor ing leader for A&M. The Aggies, playing on the the ory that an opponent can’t score unless he has the ball, held the Cougars to only seven points with more than 11 minutes gone in the game, while building up an eight point lead for themselves. At one point in that period the Cadets had a nine point margin, but a combination of shots by Bill Hath away and Pete Markle narrowed the gap to three points at half time, the scoreboard reading 27-24. A&M had 37.9 per cent of their early in the second half and had a 10 point lead midway in . the pe riod. At one point in that half the Farmers held a 24 point lead. Free throws were almost the Ag gies’ downfall in the first half, the Farmers hitting only five of 12 free shots. The Cougars meshed 10 of 12 in the same period. A&M’s accuracy improved in the second half with the Cadets sinking 10 of 13. Markle was the high point man for Houston, tying Chapman’s to tal of 16 points. Markle was the only Cougar to score in double figures. In over 44 years of basketball the Aggies have won 233 while losing 313, a .427 average. The largest A&M conference win streak was 1920-23 when the Farmers won the SWC champion ship outright four times in a row. But, they had-to wait until 1951 before they won it again, and that time it was a three way tie with TCU and Texas. Dick O’Neal of TCU has the most individual records in the confer ence, without A&M being able to claim even one.
