Bob Rogers’ Basketball Era
Tops at Aggieland Since 1951
By BOB WEEKLEY
Battalion Sports Editor
Basketball Coach Bob Rogers,
who began his third year at the
helm at the A&M cage fortunes
Tuesday night, has done something
no other Aggie basketball coach
has been able to do prior to the
golden year of 1951. . .he’s fielded
a basketball team that is capable
of contention for the Southwest
Conference title.
His first team at Aggieland, the
1957-58 squad, posted an 11-13 sea
son record, but upset the league
leader in three consecutive games.
Last year his Aggies wound up the
season with a 15-9 mark, and won
the Southwest Conference Tourna
ment, the first in A&M’s history.
This year the experts are billing
his team as one of the top three
squads in the conference, which
covers a lot more ground in actu
ality than just the Southwest. His
key to success has been the brand
of ball the old pro, Hank Iba,
taught at Oklahoma State Univer
sity, and a brand of recruiting that
has the other coaches in the con
ference going around with hungry
loqks in their eye.
Last year, his first to do any
real recruiting in the SWC, Rog
ers came up with Carroll Brous
sard and John Keller, plus a couple
of other top cagers who soon de
parted for other grazing grounds.
This year he signed the top school
boy prize in this part of the coun
try, Lewis Qualls. y
But more than that, he has raid
ed the junior colleges around the
state to come up with a group of
the more outstanding cagers in the
Southwest.
Now whether or not the Aggies
will be able to cop the champion
ship this year is a question that
only time can tell, but Rogers and
his assistant, Shelby Metcalf, can

‘‘Serving Texas Aggies”
give old Father Time a run for
his money.
There’s been more than just a
few records broken since Rogers
first hung his hat in the A&M ath
letic department, and more are go
ing to be broken while he’s here.
Last year Neil Swisher set a new
record of most points scored in
three years of varsity basketball,
and Archie Carroll racked up a
new mark of most points in one
season.
Tuesday night two more records
were set by a Rogers-coached team
at A&M, that of most points scored
in one game, and the biggest point
spread between two teams in one
game. The first mark broke one
set by a Rogers team last year
against the University of Houston.
Without any real tall men in
the conference this year, men of
such caliber as TCU’s H. E. Kirch-
ner and Rice’s Tom Robitaille, the
conference should settle down to a
race between good “middle” sized
irfen and “quick" average size ath
letes. In this case the size should
range from 6-7 on down to SMU’s
xVIax Williams’ 5-10.
The Aggies have one outstanding
“middle” sized man in senior
Wayne Lawrence, who should be
ready for an outstanding year if
ne can shake the injuries that have
ougged him for the past couple of
seasons. Just a step behind Law
rence in size, but strong on shoot
ing ability, is 6-5 Carroll Brous
sard, the top sophomore in the con
ference.
Add to this list four, count ’em,
four junior college all-Americans
and you have an impressive basket
ball team. . .at least on paper..
The four all-Americans are Pat
and Don Stanley, Wayne Annett
and Kelly Chapman, the Kentucky
jackrabbit.
