Texas Wins
First Place
In Debating
The University of Texax took
first place in the 11th annual A&M
Invitational Debate Tourn^nent
held here Friday and Saturday.
Sixteen schools competed in the
debate. They were A&M, Texas,
Lamar Tech, St. Mary’s University,
Del Mar College, University of
Houston, Southwest Texas State,
Baylor, Texas Christian Univer
sity, Texas Lutheran, Blinn Junior
College, Stephen F. Austin, Har-
din-Simmons, Rice, Wharton Jun
ior College, Southern Methodist
University.
Texas took the senior division.
The Texas team consisted of Eddie
Broudreaux and Julius Glickman.
Second place in the senior divi
sion went to SMU, a team headed
by debaters Rod Brister and Jim
Craig.
Stephen F. Austin was third.
Horace Hartsell and John Brad
shaw debated for Stephen F. Aus
tin.
In the junior division, Rice’s Jim
Bob Doty and Reed Martin took
first place. Rice was the only un
defeated team in the tournament.
Anne McCall and Mike Henke of
Baylor placed second, and Hous
ton’s John Perdue and Russell
Stanley placed third.
Individual speakers awarded at
the tournament were Brister, SMU;
Neil Weatherhogg, TCU; and
Judy Williams of Baylor, all in
the senior division.

Baylor; and Doty of Rice.

8 in Guion Hall, with ten outstand
ing acts highlighting the evening
program.

Yesterday
A review team from the Atomic
Energy Commission visited the De
partment of Oceanography and Me-
teorology here yesterday.
The group consisted of Dr. I. E.
Wallen of the Environmental Sci
ences Branch of the Division of
Biology and Medicine, Dr. John
Whitnah of the AEC staff and Dr.
Edward Goldberg of Scripps Insti
tution.
They reviewed the status of the
project started some four years
ago under the direction of Dr.
Richard Bader concerning the ef
fects of radioactive substances in
the sea. Dr. K. M. Rae also is
conducting research along this
line.
Air Firce meteorological train-
: ng representatives were also here.
They were William Jenner of the
Air Weather Service and Maj. John
Collins of the Air Force Institute
of Technology. They discussed the
department’s training program in
meteorology for air force officers.
Capt. Paul S. Bauer, special con
sultant on oceanography, subcom
mittee on oceanography of the
House Merchant Marine and Fish
eries committee, also arrived at
noon.
Dr. Robert E. Stevenson, staff
member in geological oceanog
raphy at the University of South
ern California, visited the depart
ment Tuesday and Wednesday,
Nov. 24-25. He has been in England
doing research on the effects of
coastal waters upon coastal clim
ate.
