THE BATTALION Friday, October 30, 1959 PAGE 5 Berry Leads Ags Saturday Powell Berry, a junior letterman from Snyder, will pilot the Aggie attack Saturday against the Arkansas Razorbacks in the place of the injured Charley Milstead. Milstead might see some action against the Hogs. PORT SLANT By BOB WEEKLEY S Football is a funny game that breeds drugstore quarterbacks, sec ond guessers and people who think the world turns only for a Satur day afternoon where two athletic teams meet in a head-on collision. Women have developed definite views on how the sport should be played, and in their own feminine way have found the perfect way to describe a football contest. My wife says, ‘It’s great when you win and lousy when you lose.” What could be simpler. It’s not so simple if you’re out there on the field trying to be great, and things can be really difficult when everything you do turns out to be lousy. * Trying to pick the winner of a game the day before it’s played also has trials and tribulations. When you pick them all you’re “good”. Make a couple of miscues’ and you’re “lousy”. Fortunately the Southwest Conference cham pionship is not picked by writers who try to guess winners days ahead of the game. Here’s my picks for this Satur day’s contest, but who can pick a winner in the turbulent SWC. A&M-ARKANSAS — It’s home coming for the Razorbacks up in the hills of Arkansas, and they want to make their queen happy With a victory. The Hogs should be on the rebound from their loss to Mississippi and are 19 point favorites to shellac the Ags. The' Razorbacks, going away. TEXAS-SMU — All the experts are picking this to be the top con test of the day for the Southwest Conference, and they’re not going to be disappointed. Texas is un defeated but the Mustangs have a healthy Meredith. The Longhorns by two touchdowns. BAYLOR-TCU — The Horned Frogs are on the comeback trail, while the Bears try to maintain that peak they reached against the Aggies last week. That 01’ Baylor line isn’t going to do much good against the “Spiked” Horned Frogs. TCU by 16 points. RICE-CLEMSON—Rice has yet to win a game this year, but look at some of the teams they have played . . . and managed to tie two of them. But Clemson’s record shows they are the better team, so it’s Clemson by six points. TEXAS TECH-TULANE — A tight contest but the Red Raiders are a team that- refuses to bow down to anyone without a fight. We have to go along with Tech, but it’s going to be close, by three points. Looking at our neighbors in Louisiana we just can’t help stick ing our noses into other peoples business and predicting the out come of the LSU-Mississippi foot ball game. Everybody says that the Tigers are the team to beat. I disagree and pick Mississippi by a touchdown. The Arkansas - A&M game will be televised in Bryan by the local TV station, so those Aggies not having the loot to travel to the Hills can watch the game on the big 21” screen. The Farmers could surprise. Ags Tackle Comeback Trail Saturday Against Second Place Arkansas Hogs The battle scared Texas Aggies, their ranks ripped by two successive Southwest Conference foes, at tempt to hit the comeback trail at the expense of the riled Razor- backs in the Hogs own back yard at Fayetteville Saturday. As the Cadets prepare to make their 11th. trip to a Porker home coming, a look at the past meet ings of the two teams are in order. A&M owns the most one-sided vic tory over Arkansas at its Home coming (34-0 in 1945) and the most shutouts over the Razorbacks for a homecoming game (three in a row from 1939 to 1945). Indeed, Arkansas has not defeated the Ag gies at home since 1951, and has won only two games at Razorback stadium since 1937. It’s a repeat situation for Ark ansas from the setting two years ago. The Razorbacks are 2-1 in conference play and desperately need a win to stay in the thick of the Southwest Conference fight. The last time the Hogs were in this position the Farmei’S downed them, and the Hogs nose dived to to cellar while A&M went on to a bowl bid. “There’s no question about it,” said Arkansas Coach Frank Broyles. “We’re at the turning point of our season. This is our most important game of the year. A&M is aware of this situation and can be expected to play desper ate football.” The Aggies have no choice but to play desperate football. With Charley Milstead on the bench the .Cadets are rated a rather forlorn chance of victory. Milstead will not start the game for A&M, but in dications are now that the Tyler senior will see some action against the Razorbacks. Powell Berry, a junior letterman from Snyder, will take over the quarterbacking choi'es in his first starting assignment of his career. Farmer Bowling Team First In Texas Collegiate League The A&M Intercollegiate Bowl ing team opened their kegler sea son with a bang, grabbing first place in the Texas Intercollegiate Traveling league with a 9-3 mark. The League is a new organiza tion and one of the first of its kind. It is the first major step taken to organize college bowling. Members of the new league are A&M, Southern Methodist, Arling ton State College, University of Texas, University of Houston and San Antonio College. Rice and North Texas State have also ex pressed interest in the league. Under rules of the league the 6-member group will roll 9-game competitive blo’cks once a month at each school’s home lanes. The Farmers have two men as league officials. Don Jones serves as president of the organization and Larry Dantzler as secretary- treasurer. SMU’a Don Sharp is vice president. Arlington State and SMU are tied for second place in the stand ings with 7-5 marks. Houston and Texas share the fourth place slot with SVi-GYs totals and San An tonio is in the cellar with a 5-7 mark. Last year the Aggies were among the top teams in five south ern states, and were winners of the Intercollegiate Tourney, the only college tournament in the Southwest. All told A&M won 12 straight matches last year. The Aggies boast one of the top bowlers in the state in the person of Bob Tomlinson. The A&M fresh man bowled a 297 point game on the Aggie alleys, then came back to top that mark with a perfect 300 game. Next League action is scheduled for November 14, with Arlington State serving as the host school. "ALL IS NOT GOLD" Seems like everybody had a crack at this piece of homely philosophy, but the originator seems to be Geoffrey Chaucer, in "The House of Fame", Book I: "Hyt is not all gold that glareth” "COUNT 10..." Was there any limit to the talents of Thomas Jefferson? Statesman, scientist, architect—he also authored this admonition: "When angry, count ten before you speak; if very angry, a hundred." * * * Jockey T-Shirts BRAND The most respected, creative name in underwear is Jockey brand. Let it guide you to the world's finest underwear. JR, fashioned by the house of Berry has seen considerable action both as a signal caller and as a left half, running at that position last week against Baylor before Milstead was injured. Berry is a good runner and a fair passer, and will probably do somq of the team’s kicking in the contest. Fullback Gordon LeBoeuf has also punted several times for the Ags. Robert Sanders and Randy Sims are probable starters for the half back positions. Sims is one of the top receivers on the team. LeBoeuf will run from the fullback slot. The French “Bull” is the Aggies top threat on the ground. Coach Jim Myers has faced the injury problem again this week and seen three of his first string linemen sidelined with various ailments. Both of the starting McGuire Leaves A&M Permanently Jesse McGuire, one of two Aggie footballers who quit the A&M squad last week, has resigned from school and returned to his home in West Texas. The star athlete had been en couraged to remain in school by Coach Jim Myers, but in a story written by The Associated Press McGuire stated that being forced to return to the Corps of Cadets had disturbed his studies to such an extent that he could no longer remain in school. ends, Ralph Smith and Russell Hill, have spent most of the week in sweat togs, but both of them could be ready by game time. Tackle Bill Godwin is a doubt ful starter this week with an in jured leg, but Alien Goehring has been shifted from guard to tackle to fill the gap. Sophomore Wayne Freiling has retained his starting role as a guard. Myers has had his backs toting footballs with them every where they’ve gone this week in an at tempt to stop the fumbling that has been so disastrious to the Ags in two straight games. The Farmers have fumbled 12 times in the past two contests. Jim Mooty is the big spark for the Razorback backfield, carrying the ball 63 times for a gain of 342 yards, second in the conference be hind TCU’s Jack Spikes. Lance Alworth, a sophomore halfback, is a big threat in the Porkers back- 'field with 70 yards on 32 carries. James Monroe, the starting quarterback for the Razorbacks, is an accurate passer, completing 14 of 18 for 122 yards. Alworth is the kicker, punting 22 times for a 36.1 average. Arkansas is ranked second in the confei*ence, with only a one point defeat by Texas to mar their SWC record. The Aggies have suf fered two defeats at the hands of conferenece foes while winning none, to reside in the league’s cel lar. AGGIES We Are Proud Of Our Tailor Made Pinks.
