    ■Frosh Battle Baylor Tonight;
9
■Both Teams Seeking First Win
I The Aggie Fish return to Kyle
! Field tonight at 7:30 p.m. against
if'ihe deflated Baylor Cubs, with the
fjjp)utcoine giving the victor their
Hfirst win of the season.
I A&M gave away a ball game to
he TCU Wogs last week by a 14-
3 score while the Cubs met the
nighty Texas Shorthorns and
|fj|ame out on the short end of a
P*5-14 score.
Coach Tom Chandler was pleas
ed with the hustle and desire his
boys showed in the opener, but
still believes his team has a long-
way to go before they start run
ning over anybody.
Doubtful players for the fresh
men tonight are tackle Bill Miller,
a 280 pound giant, Guard Bryan
Stuckey, Tackle James Ferguson
and Halfback Herb Smith. None

I The Southwest Conference would
be having a great year were it
not for the Southeastern Confer-
ent e. Four of the five intersection
al losses have come from there.
I The big trouble is that Louisiana
$tate is a member of the South
-eastern Conference and Louisiana
|tate is the best team in the na
tion. The Southwest Conference
■Spas unfortunate enough to have
‘three of its teams play LSU—Rice,
Texas Christian, and Baylor.
I Another unfortunate situation
comes from the fact that Georgia
had to choose this year to be great
once more. Southern Methodist
took a licking from the Techs.
■ The only other intersectional
I loss was to a southern team—rice
Was belted by Duke. But the South
west has a majority in its warfare
with the South, winning two games
while losing one.
■ In all other areas the league is
lupreme. It has really poured it
»n the Big Eight Conference, win
ning five games out of ’fiVe.
■ Among them was a victory by Tex-
Ws over Oklahoma, which means
. the best of the Big Eight was in
cluded in the conference’s swipe.
■ The league also has been victori
ous three times against Missouri
Valley teams, beaten two Pacific
Coast outfits, one Big Ten team
and one Eastern team.
3 There are some tough intersec
tional games coming up but the
Conference already is so far ahead
* it can’t help but finish first for
the season. The record is 14-5-1
with six games to go.
Texas Christian plays Pitt, Ark
ansas engages Mississippi, Rice
tackles Clemson and Baylor plays
Southern California in the games
the league is likely to lose. Tulane
and Arizona are on the schedule
but should be taken into camp all
right.
But for Louisiana State the
league could have compiled its best
record in intersectional football
history. In the future the boys
ought to spread it out more and
not play any certain team more
than once in a season.
Texas’ victory over Oklahoma
showed that the Sooners weren’t
getting the best athletes from Tex
as after all. It has often been stat
ed that Oklahoma managed to
snare the top schoolboy football
players away from the Southwest
Conference members. The method
to stop it was pointed out v like
this: beat Oklahoma and it’ll cut
down on the flow of athletes to
Oklahoma. Most top athletes go to
a school where they think they
will be on a winning team.
Last year’s Texas victory over
Oklahoma—the first in seven years
—hadn’t done anything to take
Texas boys away from the Sooners
that would be available this year.
Thus, Texas’ victory last week
over Oklahoma just showed that
Oklahoma wasn’t really getting
the cream of the crop.
Anyway, it now seems likely
that fewer and fewer Texas boys
will be going up Oklahoma way.
That is, they won t until Okla
homa regains its winning ways
again. That might be in the far
distant future.
are on the starting eleven.
The Aggies will have an edge
in the line, putting their 210 pound
average against Baylor’s 203, but
the Cubs have a decided superiority
in their aerial game with quarter
back Don Trull of Oklahoma City
scheduled to throw the pigskin.
A&M proved against TCU they
had a weak pass defense, allowing
the Wogs 84 yards in the air while
they were able to make only 14.
Cub Coach Catfish Smith has
been pleased with the play of line
men Bobby Crenshaw, Johnny Jes
sup, Gus Caraday and Robert
Buck.
In the Cub’s game with Texas
last week Stuart McBirnie and
Bob Abney were the top passers.
Ronnie Brice will pilot the
Frosh again this week and will
have his running mates Lee Roy
Caffey at fullback and Jon Mason
and Eddie Dolezal at halfbacks.
Mason, the 9.7 speedster from
New Mexico, is the most explosive
runner in the Aggie backfield
while Caffey, a 6-3, 205 pounder
from Thorndale has the weight
and power to bull through the mid
dle of the Cub’s line. Caffey aver
aged around four yards per carry
against the Wogs.

Ags Picked Seven PointUnderdog Against TCU
The TCU Horned Frogs are 7%
point favorites over the Aggies,
with the gnme scheduled to be
played in Fort Worth. The Cadets
have won three of their last four
games with the Horned Frogs.
SMU is a 7 point choice over
Rice at Houston, with both teams
playing their first conference
game of the season. SMU has a
2-1 record, while the Rice Owls
are just the opposite, 1-2.
Texas and Arkansas meet in the
battle of the week for the confer
ence with the Longhorns voted a
solid 7 points favorite. Both teams
are undefeated in season play.
Baylor has a 6 point edge over
once beaten Texas Tech, but no
body knows the reason why. Baylor
has won only one game, against
weak Colorado, while Tech has
stormed past A&M, Oregon State
and Tulsa and lost to TCU.

SWC Basketball Practice
Op ens; No Games Till December
Basketball practice opens today
in the Southwest Conference, but
no games will be played until af
ter football season.
Arkansas, Texas A&M and Tex
as have been considered the top
three of the coming race, but
Southern Methodist is rated high.
Defending champion Texas
Christian lost heavily and isn’t
likely to be a title contender.
Texas is hopeful after winning
only four game of 24 and finishing
at the bottom of the conference in
19J59. There are nine returning let-
termen and a letterman from 1958
—Brenton Hughes.
Arkansas also will have nine
lettermen and A&M shows five
plus some of the top sophomore
prospects in the league.
