Organized in 1947, the team represents the freshman class as an expert drill unit led by its own elected officers. I.Ed. Club Plans For Fall Functions Tuesday Evening A meeting of the Industrial Ed ucation Club will be held Oct. 6 to make plans for the fall func tions. At the first meeting of the year the club elected Don Ingram, pres ident; Don Bullock, vice president; Sam Meeks, secretary; Gayle Moore, treasurer; J. Griffith, soc ial chairman; Rip Gorman, pro gram chairman, and Seth Hanovice, reporter. Pinky P,inkerton was elected representative to the Engi neering Council. Stanton Babcock has assumed command of the VIII US Army Corps (Reserve) with headquarters in Austin. As corps commander, General Babcock commands over 120,000 Army reservists as well as all ac tive Army personnel assigned to the Corps headquarters, the 22 area command (USAR) offices’ and three sector commands thru- out the States of Texas and New Mexico. He also is responsible for the administration, training and supply of all Army Reserve units in the Corps area. Babcock recently returned from Paris, France, where he was Chief of the Joint Military Assistance Advisory Group. Prior to this as signment, he commanded the 2nd Armored Division. Entering the United States Mil itary Academy at West Point in 1921, Babcock was graduated on June 12, 1925 as a second lieuten ant of Cavalry and assigned to the 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Clark, Tex. After a course at the University of Michigan in the Institute of Far Eastern Studies, Babcock went to Tokyo in 1938 as a language offi cer and spent three years study ing Japanese military units. In 1941, he became Assistant Military Attache to Japan and was serving •in that capacity when World War II started. From 1942 to 1943, Babcock served in the Intelligence Section of the War Department General Staff and General Headquarters, Southwest Pacific Area. In 1944, he was a member ofYhe Joint War Plans Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1945, he was assigned to III Amphibious Corps, Fleet Marine Force, and served with the 1st- arid 6th Marine Di visions in the Battle of Okinawa. During the battle, he was wound ed and evacuated to the United States in May 1945. Upon release from the hispital, Babcock served as War Depaz’t- ment member of the Far Eastern Commission — an International Commission charged with estab lishing policy for the occupation of Japan. In 1946, he was trans ferred to General Headquarters, Far East Command, and became Chief of Plans in the Operations and Training Section. In 1950, he returned to the Uni ted States to become Military Ad visor to the Honorable John Foster Dulles in the negotiations of the Treaty of Peace with Japan. From 1951 to 1953, Babcock served in New York and Paris as Military and Political Advisor to the U. S. Representative to the United Nations. In the latter part of 1953, he was Defense Depart ment Representative at the Pre liminary Political Conference in Korea. On Jan. 19, 1954, he was promoted to Brigadier General and again assigned to the Far East. He reported for duty as Assist ant Divisin Commander, 7th In fantry Division, on Feb. 4, 1954. Later that year he returned to the U. S. and was placed on loan to the Department of State and ap pointed Counselor of the U. S.
