S. water sci entists will discuss phases of Tex as water problems, ranging from contamination by radioactive fall out to water requirements for irri gated farming and industrial uses, at a two-day meeting at A&M, Sept. 10-11. Delegates to the conference, the only such annual statewide meet ing of its type in Texas, will reg ister on the afternoon of Wednes day, Sept. 9, and regular sessions of the meeting wil be held on the two following days. The conference is divided into three major sections, devoted to water uses and standards, recla mation and reuse of water and equities in water utilization. Wednesday speakers include Dr. Mary Anna Grimes Retires From Experiment Station Here Mary Anna Grimes is retiring from the professional staff of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station after more than 32 years of service. Miss Grimes' has worked full time on clothing and textile re search, mainly with cotton fibers and fabrics. Serving as acting head of the Department of Rural Home Re search during 1954-56 and as pro fessor since 1947, Miss Grimes has written more than 50 publications, including numerous articles for scientific journals, and has pre sented may papers before profes sional organizations. Miss Grimes was born in Green wood, Mo. and received her bach elor and master degrees from Kan sas State University. She did graduate work at the University of Chicago and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before joining the TAES staff in 1927 as a textiles and clothing specialist, she taught in high schools and col leges in Kansas and Iowa. In addition to serving as secre tary and board member of the Tex as Agricultural Workers Associa tion, Miss Grimes held various of fices in the Texas Home Economics Association and the American Home Economics Association. She is an active member of the Amei 1 - ican Association of Textile Chem ists and Colorists, British Textile Institute, U. S. Textile Institute and the American Association for the Advancement of Scientists. Miss Grimes is a member of the honorary societies of Sigma Xi and Phi Kappa Phi and is recognized in the American Men of Science, a book listing outstanding scientists. Conrad P. Straub, chief of radio logical health research activities, division of radiological health, Robert A. Taft Sanitary Engineer ing Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, who will discuss radioactive fallouts as they relate to water supplies and to agriculture. Other first-day speakers will be R. G. Herzik, Jr., director of the division of sanitary engineering of the Texas State Department of Health, Austin . Dr. D. Wynne Thorne, director of the Utah Agri cultural Experiment Station. Lo gan, Utah; C. A. Burleson, associ ate agronomist for the Texas Agri cultural Experiment Station’s Wes laco substation; Dr. Clarence C. Cottam, director of the Welder Wildlife Refuge, J. Frank Gray, farmer and member of the tate Soil Consei’vation Board, Lubbock. Also, Dr. C. H. Connell, profes sor of sanitation, department of preventive medicine and public health, University of Texas Medi cal Branch, Galveston; and Doug las E. Noll, staff engineer for Hagan Chemicals and Controls, Inc., Pittsburgh, Pa. On Thursday, delegates will hear Dr. Frank L. Parker, engi neering leader. Health Physics Division, Oak Ridge National Lab oratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, discuss “Dispersal of Radioactive Contaminants in Fresh Water.” Other speakers will include Dr. Frederic O. Sargent, land econo mist, A&M; Dr' Alan Loshe, con sulting geologist, Corpus Christi; Bernard B. Berger, chief of the water supply and water pollution research department of health, education and welfare, Robert A. Taft, Sanitary Engineering Center, Cincinnati, Ohio; and Dr. Leo B. Merrill, range management ex pert for the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station’s Sonora sub station. ^ Approximately 200 hydrologists, industrial and municipal reservoir engineers, health agency officials, and representatives of federal, state and municipal agencies con cerned with Texas water problems are expected to attend the A&M meeting.
