Tefertiller Joins
Ag Economics Staff
Dr. Kenneth R. Tefertiller joined
the staff of the Department of
Agricultural Economics and Socio
logy at A&M on Aug. 1, Dr. Ty-
rus R. Timm, head of the depart
ment, said this week.
Tefertiller is a native of Okla
homa where he received his B.S.
degree from Oklahoma, State Uni
versity in 1952. He then served
two years as a commissioned offi
cer in the Army and returned to
Oklahoma State University where
he received his M.S. degree in
1956.
He then went to the University
of Illinois where he recently re
ceived his Ph.D. degree. In 1957
he won the award of the Western
Farm Economics Assn, for an out
standing graduate study paper.
The paper was entitled “Rates of
Concentrates-Roughage Substitu
tion and Economic Optimums in
Feeding Yearling Steers and Heif
ers.”
Tefertiller’s major interests are
farm management and production
economics and he is especially in
terested in linear programming.
He has been trained in economic
theory, production economics and ’
linear programming, and because
of this says Timm, “He is par
ticularly well qualified to work
with other departments in analyz
ing their research results.
At A&M Tefertiller will do both
graduate and undergraduate work
as well as research.
Tefertiller is 28-years-old.
‘Flick’ to Present
Stories of Towns
A color panorama of life in San
Francisco and the story of the re
building of Waco after the disas
trous 1953 tornado will unfold on
“Operation Flick” — free films to
be shown Sunday at 3 p.m. in
Rooms 2A-2B of the Memorial Stu
dent Center.
The color film “San Francisco”
emphasizes the more spectacular
and exotic aspects of the city and
includes a brief historical sketch.
“The seai’ch” illustrates the four
major phases entered into by the
people of Waco following the tor
nado; a state of shock, the emer
gency relief period, the reaction
and the final readjustment.
Former Student
In Little Rock
Capt. Thomas Z. James of Poca
hontas, Ark., a former A&M stu
dent and a 1951 graduate of the
U. S. Military Academy at West
Point, reported to the Little Rock
District of the Army Engineers
July 31 after a two-year as
signment in Viet-Nam.
While in the Little Rock District,
he will be assigned to the Darda-
nelle Lock and Dam project.
Following graduation from West
Point, Capt. James attended the
Infantry Basic Officers Course,
Fort Benning, Ga. He went to
Alaska in 1952, remaining there
two years during which he tranS*-
ferred from the Infantry to the
Corps of Engineers. He was sta
tioned at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.,
to August 1955 when he attended
the Engineer Advanced Course at
Fort Belvoir, Va., and then A&M,
where he received the master's de
gree in civil engineering in 1957.
While in Viet-Nam, he was En
gineer Advisor with the Military
Assistance Advisory Group at the
Viet-Nam Military Academy.
Capt. James is married to the
former Miss Darlene M. Hornung
of Hondo, Tex. They have a 5-
year-old daughter and 2-year-old
son. A sister of Capt. James, Mrs.
Warren Brow^ resides in Walnut
Ridge, Ark.
Both Doctors
And Children
Dread Shots
AP News features
IT GOES without saying that
youngsters don’t like shots. And
believe it or not, doctor's don’t like
to give shots to children. Doctors
don’t like to hurt youngsters. They
give shots only because they know
the child will benefit from the
medicene poked into him this way.
Most shots hurt very liUle. Some
really don't huH at all.
Lilly has to have a shot. She
closed her eyes, stuck out her arm.
The doctor worked quickly and
talked hard and fast; after a bit
Lilly said:
“Please hurry doctor and get it
over.”
“Why, child,” said the doctor,
“You had that shot long ago.”
“I did?” said the child in amaze
ment. “I didn’t feel it at all.”
This happens often.
Nevertheless •children dread
shots.
When a child knows he is going
to get a shot he is apprehensive
until it is over, then he chn relax
and enjoy the rest of the visit to
the doctor's office. If a child has
to wait a little before his turn to
see the doctor, it’s often a good
idea to bring the child into a side
room, give him the shot quickly,
let him go back and play until his
turn to be examined comes up.
Be Honest
Much as children dislike shots
its necessary to be honest with
them about it.
Mrs. Traymore promised Ted
that the doctor wouldn’t give him
a shot today. Ted came happily
into the examining room. Mrs.
Traymore knew the child was due
for a shot, in fact she had made
the appointment for that very pur
pose. She simply lied to her child
because it was the easiest thing
to do at the moment.
It’s impossible for a doctor to
build up confidence in a child when
the basis of ti-ust is destroyed by
direct lies. Not cxnly was Ted full
of resentment against the doctor
but also against his mother.
Occasionally one .runs into a pa
rent who uses the doctor as a
threat over a child to make him
behave.
“If you don’t eat those vege
tables, I’ll take you right down to
the doctor and he’ll give you a
shot.”
This is the modern version of
the old bogey man. The great dif
ference being that the doctor is
a real person who is trying his
best to establish a friendly confi
dent relationship with the child.
