The Battalion College Station (Brazos County), Texas Thursday July 2, 1959 PAGE 3 The Little League Corner Scientist Returns From Cambridge Richard M. Adams, an adminis trative research scientist in the Department of Oceanography and Meteorology, has returned from an 18-month leave of absence in Cambridge, Mass., where he di rected a phase of the satellite tracking program of the Smithon- ian Astrophysical Observatory. Adams has been chief of the Computation Division of the Ob servatory’s satellite tracking pro gram. At Cambridge, he directed com putations based on satellite ob servations from 12 satellite track ing stations and 200 or more moon watch teams located in different parts of the world. From these observations, pre cise information on minute to minute location of the satellites could be obtained for agencies conducting experiments aboard the satellites. Also, by computing the daily observation reports, predic tions on the time, altitude and azimuth of the satellites could be determined for the tracking sta tions and moonwatch teams. By RUSSELL BROWN With a week’s layoff cutting ac tion to a minimum, the American League South stated the second half Monday night with two ball games—one a slugest, one a pitch ers’ battle. In the first tilt, the White Sox edged out the Orioles, 14-13 in five innings behind the pitching of Ed die Putz and Duke Butler and the hitting of Tommy Cartwright, Charles Ibert, Carl Gough and Joe Powell. Putz took the win with the loss going to starter Rodney Greer. Will Edmonds also hurled for the Birds. The score was knotted at 5-5 when the White Sox blew the game apart with nine runs in the fifth. The Orioles came back to score eight but couldn’t get the tying run aci’oss. Jerry Davis doubled twice to lead the loses. In the second contest the Sena tors used two errors and a con tested balk to score their 1-0 win behind Walter Varvel. Both Var- vel and Randy Hall of the Sox yielded two hits but the Senators errors were not as costly as the Sox errors. Hubert Hearne led the Sox with two doubles while Randy Storms and Larry Coufal got the Senator hits. The game is under protest on the Balk ruling. With limited action this week the players and managers should be pointed out at this time. Fol lowing are the four squads and their mentors: Senators—Howard Nelson, Larry Coufal, Russell Hanna, Derrel Gos sett, Walter Varvel, Randy Storms, Milton Moore, Marvin Smith, Jim Beamer, Larry Godfrey, Mark Mikulec, Eddie Slovacek, Mike Cooper, Billy Elder and David Terwey. Hank Mills is the man ager. Red Sox—Jimbo Robison, Bob Jones, Randy Hall, Hubert Hearne, Duke Miller, Larry Linton, Jan Dozier, Derrill Nixon, Sam Cres- well, Steve Prescott, Andy Dean, James Creswell, Charles Holland, David Murphy and Roger Nichols. Manager is Manuel Garcia. White Sox—Duke Butler, John Skrabanek, Carl Gough, Charles Ibert, Joe Powell, James Carter, .David McCorvey, Tommy Cai’t- wright, Eddie Putz, Billy Braddy, Jim Butler, Jackie Perryman, Rob Linton and Billy Putz. William Hemphill is manager. Orioles — Larry Mayes, Mark Hayes, Will Edmonds, John Bal- dauf, Rodney Chaney, Lee Martin, Bobby Ammirata, Rob Haley, Doyle Robertson, Jon Ammirata and David Price. Wayne Smith is manager. The factory selling price of golf equipment pur-chased during 1957 was $60,711,924, reports the Ath letic Goods Manufacturers’ Assn.
