Weekes, a long- timle member of the physics -fac ulty here, has been appointed act ing head of the college’s Depart ment of Physics. Tltee head of the department, Dr. J. Gi. Potter, has been granted a 15-mionth leave of absence by the college for an assignment with the National Science Foundation in Washington, D. C. Weiekes has been associated with A&M since the fall of 1937 when he joilned the faculty as a physics instructor. He has been a profes sor of physics since 1945. During a two-year period in the early part of World War II, he was on leave of absence for a speciaJ assignment in radar re search at the Massachusetts Insti tute of Technology. He served for several years as a consultant to the Solid State Division of the Oak Ridge Na tional Laboratory, and represents A&M on the Council of the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Stud ies. A native of Massachusetts, Weekes received his B. S. degree from Middlebury College, Middle- bury, Vt. in 1924, his M. A. degree from Amherst College, Amherst, Mass., in 1926 and his Ph. D. from Cornell University in 1937. His work here has included both teaching and research with his present research interests being solid state physics ancj electro magnetic theory. Beamer, Redmond Attend Conference Dr. R. J. Beamer, chief, small animal clinic, Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, and Dr. Harold Red mond, professor of veterinary medicine and surgery and research, School of Veterinary Medicine, at- tendede the meeting of the Louis iana State Veterinary Medical Assn, held at Monroe, La., this week. Prof. Holleman is the official delegate of the Brazos Chapter of the American Institute of Arch itects. Two senior architectural design students of A&M, Joe B. Evans Attending Four Year Congress in Relguim Ben II. Evans, head of the archi tectural research division of the Texas Engineering Experiment Station, left June 12 with Mrs. Ev ans for Brussels, Belgium, where he will attend the 4-year Congress of the International Commission on Illumination. The Congress will be attended by scientists and illuminating engi neers from all parts of the world who will discuss new aspects of lighting and research. The Evans’ itinerary calls for 10 days in Brussels at the conference followed by two days’ vacation in Paris and a visit in London at the British government’s building re search station to confer with re searchers. In London he also plans to visit with practicing architects and architectural educators con cerning recent developments in the architectural field.
