The Battalion College Station (Brazos County), Texas Thursday, June 4, 1959 PAGES Engineering Excellence The Convair Award for Excellence in En- $1,200, was presented to Holcomb by H. W. gineering Teaching was presented recently Hinckley, right, assistant chief engineer, to Dr. Robert M. Holcomb, professor of civil Products Design, Convair. engineering, A&M. The award, a check for Driver Education Technique At A&M Discribed in Article Driver education technique at A&M was described in an article in the May, 1959, issue of Ford Motor Company’s Driver Educa tion News. The article, entitled “Talking the Road,” was written by Dr. Leslie V. Hawkins, associate pro fessor of industrial education at A&M. Dr. Hawkins wrote that “to impress upon the beginning driver the necessity of ‘reading’ the road •—or seeing what lies ahead—we have used the technique of re questing the students to tell us what they see as they drive.” As the student driver progresses along the road or street, he de scribes what he sees. Some ex amples are: “Stop ' sign ahead,” “Two pedestrians walking on the right,” “Car parked at the curb,’ “Car approaching fast from the rear,” “Speed limit 25 miles per hour.” It was explained that this tech nique works very well in making the student aware of the necessity of reading the road ahead of the car and establish the habit of ob serving the surroundings which might affect driving conditions. Dr. Hawkins said this system gives the instructor a basis upon which to determine what the stu dent is seeing. It will tell whether the student is keeping his eyes moving and observing what lies ahead, to the sides and behind him. Also, the instructor is able to determine whether or not the student is using “aim-high vision” by how far ahead he is describing the road. Marketing Aggies Given Scholarships Two outstanding junior market ing major at A&M have been awai’ded $250 scholarships for the 1959-60 school year. The awards were made by the Houston Sales Executive Club to John Michael Brazzel of 213 Stratford, Houston, and William Windsor Waggoner of 2005 Smyth, Plainview. The Houston Sales Executive Club presents scholarships to out standing marketing majors each year to promote interest in the field of selling.
