He en tered the Army in October, 1941, as a first lieutenant, served in China and was discharged in Feb ruary, 1946, with the rank of ma jor. Following the war, McNiel ^erved for about three years as teacher and supervisor of the Mc Lennan County Vocational School in Waco. He then returned to A&M for graduate study, receiving his M.S. degree in agricultural education in 1952 and his doctor’s degree in ge netics in 1955. His doctorate re search work was regarded as an outstanding contribution to the science of animal breeding in that it breaks the selection of outstand ing breeding animals down to mathematical relations.
