Dr. Grady P. Parker, head of
the Department of Education and
Commentator Staff
Plans for 1959-60
A meeting was held last night
by incoming editor of ' The Com
mentator, Tucker Sutherland, to
lay the groundwork for naming
the 1959-60 staff.
Sutherland also discussed some
tentative plans for changing the
magazine for next year. He said
nothing really definite could be es
tablished until the new Dean of
Arts and Sciences arrives.
He said the staff was also con
templating a general overhaul of
the magazine, including a new
name.
Sutherland stated the magazine
will not be a humor magazine and
it will not be strictly a literary
magazine as the Commentator was
this year. The name which looks
like the most favorable is The Ag
gie Scholar, Sutherland said.
Men who signed as possible
members of next years staff are
Tom Stafford, Bob Roberts, Jim
Coston, Jim Gibson, Joe Jackson,
Kenneth Allen, Chuck Kincaid, Dan
Louis, Richard Reiser, Jay Collins,
Bob Dodson, Pat Mazzeo, John
Kiekbusch, Dal Herring, Bill
Broussard and Tommy Holbein.
Psychology, said that 15 students
from the department are complet
ing their practice teaching this
semester at the two school systems.
Five student teachers are as
signed to A&M Consolidated High
School in College Station, four to
Stephen F. Austin High School in j
Bryan and three each to Bryan’s
junior high schools, Lamar and
Jones.
Education majors are required
to participate in the student teach
ing program for one semester dur
ing their senior year, spending a
minimum of 15 hours in the class
room each week.
These semesters are divided in
to three definite periods for the
student teacher. First, he observes
the work and methods of the reg
ular, or cooperating teacher. Next,
he assists the teacher with varied
duties, and third, he assumes* full
responsibility of the classroom for
at least six weeks.
During the 18 weeks of the stu
dent’s practice teaching, he en
gages in most of the activities that
a classroom teacher would exper
ience. He attends meetings of the
Parent-Teacher Assn.', the faculty
and student organizations, clubs
and homerooms, visits homes of
students when accompanied by the
cooperating teachers and partici
pates in various school-community
functions.
To further his preparation, each
practice teacher is required to keep
a daily “log” of his classroom ex
periences, make a written study of
each student in his assigned class
and select one student for a more
complete child study and analysis.
They are also required to prepare
teaching plans.
