Three days have been missed now due to rain and intended lay off. The Farmers now have only 20 days remaining in which to work in 18 days of practice. Under Southwest Conference rules a team may have 18 days on the practice field with a 10-day grace period to make up for rain, layoffs, etc. Coach Jim Myers put his charges through blackboard drills yesterday pouring over offensive and defensive plays and forma tions. Compared to last year, injuries are down to a minimum with no serious injuries being sustained by the players. Fullback Gordon Le- Boeuf had a knee twisted while Jim Murphy had several stitches taken in his chin. But besides those only bruises and minor cuts have marred practice. Returning lettermen from last season still lead the candidates for the first string positions but soph omores are starting to push their AGGIE SPECIAL MOTOR TUNE-UP—APRIL ONLY 4 Cyl. cars $7.95 Labor and up 6 Cyl. cars $8.95 Labor and up 8 Cyl. cars $9.95 Labor and up Plus Parts Tune-up (major) includes Distributor and Carburetor (Overhaul) Tune-up Specialist: J. Charley Milstead leads backfield candidates in the multiple offense formations at the quarterback po sition, trailed by Powell Berry, a prospective junior frqm Snyder. Both athletes are lettermen under Myers’ single wing. Fullbacks are led by the injured LeBoeuf and Murphy. Murphy, Franklin Fisher and Bob Bindley, the other fullbacks, are all sopho mores. The least experienced position in the backfield is left half, but the talent there could more than make up for the lack of experience. Jon Few in holding down the starting role at present but is closely railed by jesse McGuire and Rodg er McFarland, both standouts on the freshman squad last season. Probably the team’s most reli able receiver stands forth at right half, the sticky-fingered Randy Sims. Behind Sims, a starter last season, are Eddie Van Dyke, Cal vin Janner and Gary Finch. In the line the biggest problem centers on ends and tackles. Ralph Smith and Jack Estes have the nod right now but James Street, a fe rocious defensive end on the fresh man squad, Travis Nevill and Rich ard Love could move up several notches. Gale Oliver, a center convei’ted to tackle, and Bill Darwin, a 207- pound, two-year lettermen, have experience at that position. Rob ert Garner, Bill Godwin and George Gray are other lettermen who could strengthen that position while John Stradinger and Bill Vincent, up from the freshman team, could move into a starting role. Both starters return from the up by Daryle Keeling and squad- guard slots last season, Allen | Goehring and Carter Franklin. Wayne Labar, a blocking back con- i verted back to the guard position, j Joe Munson and Buddy Payne are | all lettermen who keep the prob- : lem slight here. j Roy Northrup appears irreplac- able at center and i s ably backed man Paul Piper. Keeling is up from the freshman team where he was a blocking back. Spring training will be climaxed by an intra-squad game April 18 when two teams composed of the maroon and white squads will kick off and face each other as an add ed attraction for high school day. Milstead Leads Backfield Candidates Charley Milstead, the triple threat mainstay of the Aggie squad last season, is the outstanding prospect for quarter back on Coach Jim Myers new multiple offense formation.
