Corps Baseball Play
Begins Again Monday
PORT SLANT
By BOB WEEKLEY
No games are scheduled this
week in the Corps Baseball Pro
gram because Travis Park is being
used by area high school teams,
but activity will resume Monday
night.
After rough sledding since the
start of play in February until the
Easter holiday break, the 8-team
Air Force and Army leagues find
themselves with a total of 35 games
to be played before the end of the
season. Each team must play sev
en games in all.

games in the first round of play,
and high school teams now using
the diamond on some nights have
further complicated matters. How
ever, the schedule for the second
half calls for play to be wrapped
up around May 7.
The rules committee will attempt
to arrange for some makeup games
to be played on the A&M varsity
and fish diamonds when those
teams are playing out of town.
No definite plans for a playoff
at the end of regular play have
been made as of now. Details will
depend on how soon all scheduled
games are played and will be an
nounced at a later date.
Team captains of both leagues
will meet in the Press Club Library
Monday at 5 p.m. to pick up sched
ules and iron out remaining rough
spots in the program, Fred Meurer,
coordinator, announced.
Monday night’s games will see
the AAA battalion square off with
the Civilians at 7:30, while the 4th
Group takfes on the Air Force Civ
ilians in the 9:15 nightcap.

The Aggie football team, a single-wing unit last fall
which finished with a 4-6 record, will try to improve its record
in the conference next season with a new offense and a fine
crop of young sophomores.
For the second year in a row Coach Jim Myers, now in
his second season as head coach at Aggieland, will install a
new system, the multiple offense. The offense is multiple
in that the Cadets will still favor their old single-wing but,
will switch to the T-formation when the occasion warrants.
There are a lot of reasons for this, but the. main onei
might well be that of trying to get more punch inside the £0-
yard line. Last year the Farmers penerated that far 20 or 30
times but couldn’t muster the power to push the ball across
the goal line.
In this new formation the Cadets may run their single
wing formation as much as half the time before switching
into the “T” that will be winged and feature all the tradition
al variations.
Focal point of the offensive attack will again center
around Charley Milstead, the aerial ace from Tyler. Milstead’s
speed, or rather the lack of it, won’t hurt him so much from
the quarterback slot while his experience at the tailback posi
tion will prove invaluable.
The switchover from the single-wing won’t be such a
large problem as Myers and his staff experienced a year ago
in bringing that formation to Aggieland. Really the only
difference in the attack is that the tailback is under the cen
ter while the linemen still trap in the single-wing method.
Milstead will be more effective at the quarterback posi
tion because of the running-pass plays. He should have time
to build up his speed in case he needs to turn the corner while
his pass will be a threat that every defensive back and line
backer will have to respect.
Sophomores will fill in the much needed speed gap the
Aggie backfield lacked last year, and they are also expected
to lend weight and depth to the Farmer line.
Such standouts as the speedy Jesse McGuire and the
hard running Rodger MacFarland will be ready to move into
position in case the durable Milstead falters, while Daryle
Keeling, Eddie Van Dyke and Jim Murphy have power to
spare when it comes to bulling their way through the oppos
ing line.
Myers also has a hard core of veterans around which to
form his new formation. There are lettermen at every posi
tion while the starting backfield could remain entirely un
changed from last season.
Co-captain Gale Oliver, a center last season, has been
moved to the tackle position while prospective junior Roy
Northrup hold down center now.
The guards return intact this season with both Allen
Goehring and Carter Franklin ready to fight for their start
ing roles.
;Both of the ends will be new at the starting post, al
though both of them did start several times last year. They
are Ralph Smith, brother of graduating starter Don, and
Jack Estes, the rangy sophomore from Olton.
Meanwhile the backfield will be composed of such
worthies as Gordon LeBoeuf, Milstead, Randy Sims and Jon
Few.
