points in conference play, an A&M
record of most points scored in one
conference season. The lanky Ag
also set a new mark in most field
goals in one season with 142 to his
credit.
Rebounding was another first
for Carroll as he led the Farmers
in that department with 96. Among
the conference’s leading scorers,
the athlete rated a fifth position,
10 points separating him from the
No. 2 slot.
Swishing Swisher, a starter for
three consecutive years, set a new
record of most points in three sea
sons of play with his total of 983.
During conference play this year
Swisher hit at a .418 clip for 206
points.
Wilmer Cox, the junior college
transfer who worked his way into
a starting role on the Aggie five
his first year at A&M, averaged
10 points per game for 141 points
over conference play.
The big redhead from Philadel
phia, Jim McNichol, finished up his
eligibility at A&M with an even
100 points. McNichol was the
most accurate Cadet on the free
throw line as he sank 36 of 44 for
an .818 percentage mark.
Everybody wondered where Kel
ly Chapman was after he became
eligible at the start of the spring
semester until the high jumping
transfer found himself in the fi
nal two games to score 28 points
and finish the season with a total
of 39. Chapman duplicated his
scoring feat in rebounding with the
same amount, 39.
Wayne Lawrence, the 6-7 junior
who was injured for half of the
conference season, was fifth in
Aggie scoring with 79 points.
Lawrence played in only seven con
ference games while his teammates
participated in 14.

First Home Game Today for Aggies
As Baseball Season Opens at A&M
Baseball steps into the limelight
today when the Aggie baseball
team trots onto the diamond to
face the University of Houston
squad in A&M’s first home game
of the season.
The Aggies, now in their first
season under Coach Tom Chandler,
dropped their season opener Mon
day to the Sam Houston Bearkats,
4-2. Chandler’s squad will face the
Bearkats in a return match Satur
day on the Kyle Field diamond.
Scheduled to be on the mound
for the Cadets today are senior
Donnie Hullum and sophomore Joe
Thompson. Hullum’s pitching form
has been delayed this season by a
sore arm, the same affliction that
plagued the slim righthander last
season. Thompson was one of the
top two pitchers on the freshman
squad last year.
Co-captain Gary Herrington will
be at the catcher position calling
the signals. Herrington, a two-
year all-conference player, batted
.367 last year and led the team in
total bases, home runs and doubles.
At first will be sophomore Dick
Hickerson, the top hitter in the
game against Sam Houston. In
that contest the tall athlete went
to the plate three times and banged
out two hits against a pitcher who
had been working out 11 weeks.

Baseball Coach Chandler
Makes Dream Come True
As Coach Tom Chandler sends
his charges onto the baseball field
today he’ll have some long range
backing in the person of George
J. Kempen, a former student who
always dreamed of Chandler hold
ing the reins at Aggieland!
Kempen, ’21, knew the former
Dallasite for nine years when
Chandler was a player and man
ager of the Alpine Rangers, a
a semi-pro team that Ag Gary
Herrington played with for the last
couple of years.
The Alpine baseball enthusiast
saw his dream come true when Jim
Myers, athletic director at A&M,
named Chandler coach at the be
ginning of the spring semester.
The alumnus was the first person
Chandler called when he heard of
the appointment.
Kempen made Chandler promise
him that at the first Aggie ball
game he would send him the ball
that the A&M pitcher used to
throw to the first batter, and he
wanted it autographed by the play
ers and Chandler.
One condition was agreed on,
though, before Kempen would
