Running events begin at 2:30 p. m. with the varsity 440-yard relay. Freshman events will be held in termittently between varsity clash es with field events beginning 30 minutes earlier at 1:45. Texas, featuring such perform ers as sprinters Eddie Southern, Hollis Gainey and Wally Wilson along with distance ace Joe Ville- real, is expected to be the class of the meet. However, the Cougars may prove able to make the Steers work for the title. Southern, 1956 Olympic star, is not entered in the middle distance events, but will give aid to Texas in the sprints and the relays. He will also participate in one of his specialties, the 120-yard high hur dles. Southern has tied for three Southwest Conference records — the 100, 220 and 440-yard dashes— and holds the 120 yard high hur dles record outright at 14.3. Boasting a wealth of depth, the Longhorns have Gainey, Wilson and Alspaugh, who together with Southern compose the Texas sprint relay team, to give much added strength. The Texas sprint relay team claims the SWC record in a blistering 40.0. In the mile relay, Southern, Wilson, Gainey and Drew Dun lap will attempt to better the SWC record time of 3:11.6 established by the Longhorns last year. Joe Villereal, who also joins the Texas group of record holders for running the mile last year in 4:10.5, should be the best of the distance men. He will compete in the 2-mile event. However, Villereal will have the Cougars’ Jerry Smartt to tan gle with in the run. The Houston distance star set the meet record last year in Austin with an ex cellent 9:35.2. The Cougafs also sport a for midable troup of sprinters in Andy Anderson, Stan Levenson, Charley Gary and Jack Farrington. But they are not expected to be up to Swartout Quits Longhorns For High School Position the Texans’ standards. The Farmers will feature Ernie Uribe in the sprints and cross country star Freddy Dulock in the distance events. x The Aggies have Uribe, Bobby Clark, Ronny Kirk patrick and Harvey Cash entered in the 100-yard dash, and relays, along with Clai’k and Robert Con- noway in the 220. In the middle distance events, Cash, Kirkpatrick and William Palmer will compete in the 440-yard dash and Charles Hajovsky in the 880. Uribe will face Southern in the 120 and 220 huddle events.
