Cross in Defiance
Of Atheism Charge
AUSTIN (A 5 ) — A barefooted,
black-bearded student dragged a
d-foot wooden cross around the
border of the University of Texas
campus Wednesday.
“I’m doing this in protest
against legislative control of val
ues,” said the student. He identi
fied himself as Eliud Martinez,
24, an Austin art student.
Four Texas legislators have
charged atheists are teaching at
major state colleges. They intro
duced a bill (HB495) to require
state-paid teachers to swear they
believe in a supreme being.
The noon demonstration fizzled
after eight minutes. Dean of Stu
dent Life Arno Nowotny warned
Martinez before he started: “You
won’t be a student tomorrow if
you do this.”
“I’ve got to,” Martinez said.
Dressed in skimny white cloth
strips that covered his midsection
and wc \ /.mg a crude mesquite-
thorn crow7i, Martinez dragged the
initialed “INRI” cross for about
200 yai’ds. The sidewalks were
crowded with students. Many
laughed.
Nowotny said later no discipli-
nai-y action would be taken be
cause the student did not get on
the campus.
Scott Carter, a bearded chem
istry major student who said he
was from near Dallas had bristling
red chin whiskers. Walter Jacob
son of Galveston, who said he was
an off and on student, had a 2-
day stubble. Both said the demon
stration was planned Tuesday
night at a tavern near the uni
versity.
Carter said stereophonic music
and beer and talk is the tavern’s
only entertainment. Asked if they
were beatniks, Carter said, “No.
Fidel Castro has had quite an in
fluence on this campus.
Campus Police Chief A. R. Ham
ilton and other police kept Mar
tinez off the campus.,
“What does he represent?”
Hamilton asked. There was no
answer.
“He’s accomplished his pur
pose,” Hamilton said. “He’s get
ting publicity and it’s bad pub
licity for the university.”
The legislators who introduced
the measure modified their origi
nal statements Tuesday.
“You’ve got to remember that
all we’ve got is based on hear
say,” Rep. Bill Hollowell of Grand
Saline said. Other sponsors are
Reps. Ben Lewis of Dallas, Joe
Chapman of Sulphur Springs and
W. T. Dungan of McKinney.
