About tiie Churches
CS Baptist Church
Has Made Progress
Ed. Note: This is the third in a
series of articles designed to famil
iarize students with churches in
the area in connection with the
coming Religious Emphasis Week.)
By ROBBIE GODWIN
Battalion Staff Writer
The First Baptist Church has, in
the words of Rev. R. D. Long
shore, “Come a long way since it
occupied the old frame building in
1943.”
The building now in use was
built in that year on the site of
the old structure. For a while the
old building was used for Sunday
School classes for several years
until the present classrooms were
built.
In 1950 the Baptist Student Cen
ter was built. This modern struc
ture is located conveniently across
the street from the main building.
It houses a library, a lounge, Bible
study classrooms, a prayer room,
recreational facilities and offices
of the Baptist Student Union di
rector.
A new modern building, begun
last May containing 15,000 square
feet of loor space, has recently
been completed. The new build
ing, presently unfurnished, will
house facilities for a minimum of
350 people when it is finished.
Rev. Longshore said total costs
of the new facilities was about
$212,000. Part of this total was
for new year-round, air-condition
ing equipment in the old church
building. The new building has
complete air-control equipment al
so, with several different machines,
located at strategic points,through
out.
In regards to the coming Religi
ous Emphasis Week, Rev. Long
shore said, “It is very advanta
geous for the school, the churches
and the students when the stu
dents become closer to the church.
Religious Emphasis Week is very
useful in helping students become
closer to the church of their
choice.”
The First Baptist Church is
holding evangelistic services all
this week as a prelude to RE Week.
Services are being held both morn
ing and evening through Friday.
Morning services are held at 9:30
and evening services at 7:00.
