PAGE 4 Thursday, February 6, 1959 The Battalion College Station (Brazos County), Texas Conference Plans No Action In Aggie Basketball Incident DALLAS (A 5 )—Ab Curtis, assist ant secretary of the Southwest Conference, said yesterday the con ference plans to take no action on an incident at College Station Tuesday when Texas A&M basket ball fans bombarded officials and players with trash and swai’med onto the floor. Don Rossi, one of the officials for the A&M-TCU game, visited Curtis yesterday to report infor mally on what happened. “Rossi said it was a wild scene,” Curtis said. “But we don’t do any thing unless we get an official pro test. The school itself generally takes corrective steps through its student leaders.” The incident began with about four minutes remaining in the game and with TCU leading by more than 20 points. TCU’s Kenneth King was ejected for landing an elbow uppercut on A&M’s Jack Collier. Then Collier and TCU’s Ronnie Stevenson exchanged words and staged a brief scuffle. A crowd of Aggies rushed onto the floor and was met by A&M coach Bob Rogers and the A&M IIOTPOIKT Sale of Sales! I shouted for the people to get back into the stands and they did. “I don’t know whether we owe anybody an apology. If we do, I guess we’ll apologize. But I don’t think anybody has a complaint. I’ve seen lots worse happen on a basketball court.” TCU coach Buster Brannon said “that kind of thing happens. I’d rather forget about it and think about our next game.” A shower of paper cups and pa per airplanes had fallen around the players during most of the game, which TCU won 76-64. Slater Martin Uninterested In Longhorn Coaching Post AUSTIN UP)—Slater Martin, University of Texas basketball star a decade ago, said yesterday he was not interested in becoming head basketball coach at his alma mater. “Take my name off the list be cause I’m not interested now,” Martin said from Philadelphia, Pa., in' a telephone interview with the Austin American. “It’s just a lit tle too early yet. Maybe in a coup le of years it might change.” Martin said he wired Texas, Ath letic Director Ed Olle not to con sider him as a successor to Mar shall Hughes. Hughes, 41, announced his re signation last month. The Long horns are in the midst of one of their worst basketball seasons. Martin’s refusal was the second time he has turned down a job with Texas. He was offered the freshman coaching job three years ago when Hughes moved up to coach the varsity, the Austin Am erican said. Olle said he did not know about Martin’s decision. “We aren’t close to the stage of hiring a coach yet.” he said. Martin was reportedly boomed for the job by exes because of his star playing in the Southwest Con- Maryland and Virginia con tributed the 100 square miles to form the District of Columbia on which to locate the national seat of government. S PORT SLANT By BOB WEEKLEY s A&M Saturday night will host the Bear basketball team and any members of the Baylor student body that might travel to Aggieland to back their team. For two consecutive years Aggies have traveled to Waco to stand up for their team as the 12th Man and returned from the parochial school with tattered clothes and bruised pride. But act like real Aggies Saturday, Ags! Yesterday the Southwest Conference announced it plans to take no action on the incident that occured in the final minutes of the TCU- A&M game Tuesday. In handing down the statement Abe Curtis, assistant secretary of the conference said: “We (the conference) don’t do anything in these cases unless we get an official protest. The school itself generally takes corrective steps through its student leaders.” A&M is lucky that such a soft-spoken verdict was handed down. If the officials had been mobbed it is entirely possible that the school could have been placed on some type of pro bation which could have severely hampered the school’s athle tic program. The school is also lucky that numerous technical fouls were not called on the home team because of the cup throw ing and name calling that took place during the game. Not only do such actions as this hurt the basketball team, but it also damages the reputation of the school and its students. It takes only one incident caused by some un thinking student to damn the school for years. Schools that have resorted to physical violence during athletic contests have been heavily censored by the press in the past. People over the state have taken notice of this and the schools concerned have been hurt in both enrollment and their public relations. There has not been an incident of this type at A&M for years and there will not be one this year. Aggies will prove they are men and act like tradition has dictated in the past. Revenge will have to come on someone else’s home grounds. HPu-r-rfect. - - $5 Layaway Til May "pEftrii nrnl CORONET Air Coolers* Kitten-quiet..
