‘Blitz’ Ordered to Death
But is Still Fat and Happy
WASHINGTON—(A 3 )—Our read
ers who love dogs and hate red
tape probably will want to hear
all about the case of Blitz and his
soldier pal.
Everybody else might as well
stop right now.
Here’s the story, for you pro
dog and antibrass people:
Back in August, 1957, a Ger
man sheperd sentry dog named
Blitz was bitten by a rabid fox in
France. He recovered and was re
stored to duty with Airman 1/C
Tom Rhodes, who’s from Indian
Head, Md.
In July, 1958 Blitz was back on
the sick list. He was losing his
sense of smell and a veterinarian
certified him as unfit. “Let
Rhodes have him for a pet,” the
vet suggested.
Hold, cried some officials at the
base in Toul-Rosier, France. These
officials pulled the rule book. They
pointed to Air Force regulations
which order the destruction of any
dog found unfit for sentry duty.
Now enters the compassionate
vet, again. He signed a death cer
tificate for Blitz. That ought to
have ended things.
But no. Here enters a military
detective. He detected that Rhodes
was still buying dog food.
Clank, clank. The legal machin
ery went into action. Rhodes was
found to have secreted Blitz, and
a summary court-martial fined
him $75 for “making a false of
ficial statement.”
Rhodes already had paid $180
to have Blitz flown back to the
United States on a commercial air
liner.
Here’s how things stand now:
Blitz is fat and happy, but is still
in France.
Rhodes has been transferred to
the Continental Air Force station
in New Mexico.
The Air Force in Europe is pre
paring a case against the vet for
signing the death certificate.
The man who achived the first
airplane flight in Canada was
John A. D. McCurdy in 1909. And
he was the first to complete suc
cessfully a flight by a British
subject anywhere in the British
Commonwealth.
The Air Force in the Pentagon
is hearing from congressman and
others. It js pretty unhappy about
the whole thing.

YOUR INTERESTS, SPECIAL ABILITIES
ARE IMPORTANT WHEN DU PONT
MAKES YOUR FIRST JOB ASSIGNMENT
BENEFIT PROGRAM
MEANS ADDED INCOME
by A. F. Hartford, Jr.
DuPont personnel representative
Don’t forget the “extras” of an em
ployee benefit program when you com
pare the job offers and salaries of
different companies. At DuPont, these
extras mean added income that doesn’t
always meet the eye. They include
life insurance, group hospitalization
and surgical coverage, accident and
health insurance, pension plan and
paid vacation.
In addition, the Company sponsors
a thrift plan. After two years of serv
ice, for every dollar you invest in
U. S. Savings Bonds the Company sets
aside 25 cents for the purchase of
common stock in your name. Roughly,
60,000 of our employees are now par
ticipating in this plan.
If you have specific questions on
DuPont benefits, just send them to
me. I’ll be happy to try to answer
them. E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.
(Inc.), Room 12421 Nemours Build
ing, Wilmington 98, Delaware.
PERSONALIZED TRAINING
RELATES TO POLICY OF
PROMOTION FROM WITHIN
Where do your interests lie? What
courses have you taken? What are
your special abilities? DuPont tries
to match these factors with available
openings to determine your first as
signment within, the Company.
Once the assignment is made, the
Company helps you apply your knowl
edge to a problem right away. You
learn by doing and by consulting with
your supervisor and others working
on various phases of the same project.
Your performance on the job is
evaluated periodically to assist you in
knqwing where you stand in the eyes
of your management. And, as you
might guess, DuPont’s personalized
training is closely related to its pro
motion policy. Practically all promo
tional opportunities are filled by ad
vancement from within the Company.
It is especially important for the
college student to know that manage
ment authority at Du Pont is decentral
ized through many departments into
small groups—small enough so that
the new man’s capabilities can be
recognized. This type of organiza
tion, plus the Company’s steady
growth, produces many opportunities.
SEND FOR INFORMATION BOOKLET
Booklets about the kinds of technical
jobs at DuPont are yours for the ask
ing. Subjects include: mechanical, civil,
metallurgical, chemical, electrical, in- 1
strumentation and industrial engineer
ing; technical sales, business adminis
tration, research and development. For
a copy of one of these booklets write to
DuPont, 12421 Nemours Building,

at Du Pont.
From start to finish, this film has
been prepared with the young engi
