s The Battalion College Station (Brazos County), Texas Wednesday, January 7, 1959 PAGES Defiant Rice Upsets Aggies, 70-65 Last Minute Burst Provides Margin By BOB WEEKLEY Battalion Sports Editor Nobody was sitting last night in White Coliseum when a fired up Rice basketball team scored five points in the last 33 seconds to down a fighting Texas Aggie squad 70-65 in a tense Southwest Conference game. Six thousand roaring fans saw Rice’s 6-5 Gary Griffin, a substitute forward, sink a driving jump shot to put the Owls ahead by two points and then cooly make a three charity tosses to put the game on ice. It was a record crowd that saw the Aggies go down in defeat for their first conference loss and second of the season. The win gave the Owls a 7-5 record in season play and a 1-1 mark for the conference. The game was nip and tuck all the way with the score being tied 13 times before the Owls put the game away in a large sack. Neil Swisher was the big gun for the night, swishing the baskets for 27 points, 20 of them in the second period. Archie Carroll was the second high scorer for the Ag gies with 20 points to his credit. Dale Ball paced the winners with 19 points followed by Tom Robitaille with 18. But don’t let the high score fool you, because it was a tight defensive game that sparked the win for the Owls. Much of the credit goes to the speedy Ball who held Swisher to seven points the first half, and Robitaille, who pulled down 10 rebounds before fouling out with 2:38 left in the game. Big Jim McNichol did a tremendous job for the Aggies, guarding both 6-9 Robitaille and 6-6 W. A. Preston, a boy who looks as tall as his running mate. Rice was deadly in its shooting from the floor, hitting 50 per cent in the first half and 57.1 per cent in the second to far outclass the Aggies who could manage to make only 37.7 per cent of their shots the entire game. Ball was again outstanding in this department, sinking 56 per cent of his shots. For the first eight minutes of the game neither team could gain an advantage until Robitajlle and Ball teamed up to give the Owls a 12-point lead. The Aggies quickly retaliated behind the shooting of Wayne Lawrence, Carroll and Swisher to tie the game up at 30-all and then send them ahead at the end of the half by two points. A&M trotted back onto the hardwood at the beginning of the second period fired up and moved quickly ahead to a five point lead before Rice could again tie the score. Fish Paste Owlets, 64 - 51 By BILL HICKLIN Battalion Sports Writer The Texas Aggie Fish literally pounded the Rice Owlets 64-51 in G. Rollie White Coliseum last night in a rugged contest marked by personal scraps on the hardwood. Carrol Broussard, Kvho leads all Fish scorers with a 24.6 point-pcr- game average, again paced the young Cadets with 18 points. But plenty of aid came from Gary White and hustling Riki Waghorne, who spent much of the night on the floor in the brutal match. Both dunked. 11. Rice was never really ip • con tention as the Fish raced to a 19-9 advantage midway in the first half, chalking up their third vic tory of the season against one set back. In the second half, the Fish, with Broussard sinking five field goals —mostly on deadly jump shots from outside—were still 10 points in front with 4:46 left to play. Broussard fouled out at this point and Waghorne and White took over. Waghorne dropped in a free throw and White contributed two more along with a driving layuji. Waghorne hit again with 26 sec onds left, and the Fish led 62-51. Mike Maroney led the Owlet of fense with 15 points and Bill Kelly hit 11 more.
