Angelo Giuseppe Roncalii was
just 21 years old when he entered
the diocese seminary at Bergamo.
Twelve years later. Aug 10. 1904,
he was ordained a priest in Rome’s
Rants Mans in Monte Church.
World War I interrupted his ec
clesiastical career briefly. He
first served a* a sergeant in th#
medical corps of the Italian army
By the time the war ended he
was an army chaplain.
Th# war over, Father Roncalii
returned to Bergamo for a three-
year term a* a lecturer on theo
logy and church history.
However, the Vatican had Its
eyes $n the young administrator-
histofVn. In 1921 he undertook
the fifst of Vatican assignments
which were to bring him praise
from three Popes
Pope Benedict XI summoned
Father Roncalii to Rome and gave
him the job of reorganizing the
Congregation for th# Propagation
of thp Faith — the congregation
that directs the vast worldwide
missionary ^tivities for the R©
man Catlaolic Church.
A year later Hus XI succeeded
Benedict and immediately took
keen interest in the work of
Father Roncalii The Pontiff sent
him traveling to many foreign
centers pver the next four years
