problem facing Coach Jim Myers
and his able staff of assistants
when the Aggies take to the grid
iron this fall with only four start
ers returning—only three of whom
saw extensive duty.
The 19f)8 version of the Cadets
will be the thinnest team in four
years as they make the change
over from the split T of the Bear
Bryant era to the single wingback
formation of Myers.
Myers’ team will be as inexperi
enced as Bryant’s 1954 team al
though not as lacking in quantity—
Bryant’s team had only 26 squad-
men.
“The most inexperienced team
I’ve ever seen,” is the way Myers
sums up his group of charges.
Only three players could feel
sure of starting positions at the
conclusion of spring ti'aining. Back
Richard Gay, end John Tracey and
tackle Ken Beck, all seniors and
two-year lettermen and the top
players from the 1955 freshman
crop whose recruiting was hindered
by the probation which barred the
Ags from two bowl games, are the
three men with relatively secure
positions.
Heisman trophy recipient John
Crow, Loyd Taylor and recent All-
Star game standout Bobby Conrad
led the list of seven starters miss
ing from the 1957 team which held
the nation’s No. 1 spot for three
weeks as it won its first eight
games before losing steam and los-
three point margins.
Other lettermen whose influence
will be greatly missed by Myers in
clude all- Amei-ican Charley Krue
ger who averaged 55 minutes per
game, quarterbacks Roddy Osborne
and Jimmy Wright, all-conference
end Bobby Marks, center John Gil
bert who played over 50 minutes
per game and six others from the
second and third teams.
With 16 returning lettermen, on
ly Beck, Tracey and Gay played a
great extent.
Lacking the depth and speed of
the last two seasons the team will
have possibly a better passing,
kicking game. Running power is
still doubtful.
Myers admits he hasn’t had a
chance to adequately appraise the
squad, but he has seen enough to
know that the problems far exceed
the proven players.
After a lot of cramming of of
fense into the players in a short
while, Myers and his aides were
well pleased with the overall con
version to the single wing and
spring training.
Backs Ed Dudley and Luther
Hall, both “castoffs” by Bryant last
fall, will be returning to strengthen
the squad. Dudley and Hall, both
of whom looked promising in the
spring, are the two returning
squadmen. Dudley lettered as a
sophomore halfback in 1955, play-

Season Opener Pits
Aggies andRa iders
The famous Cotton Bowl will be
the site of the 17th renewal of
the rivalry between the Cadets
and the Texas Tech Red Raiders
at 8 p. m. Saturday, Sept. 20.
It will be the season’s opener for
both squads.
With 20 returning lettermen
from last year’s 28 letter winners,
Tech will be counting heavily on
experience to guide them through
this season and to try and cop the
opener.- — —
The odds will be with the Ags
in more ways than one, though.
The Farmers hold a 13-3 record of
wins and losses over the Raiders
and also the Ags have won 54 Southwest Conference in 1956, but
openers while losing only seven and won’t be able to compete for the
tying two. One of the losses was football championship until the
