The Little League Corner
By KIM JOHNS
The Orioles and the White Sox
enjoyed 12-10 and 12-1 victories
over the Senators and the Red Sox,
respectively, in Thursday play.
Both games were full of suspense
and excitement as pitcher Jimbo
Bevans of the White Sox pitched
the first no-hitter of the season
and the Orioles won their first
game of the 1958 season after 11
straight losses.
Jim Bevans ruined his shut-out
against the Red Sox when he threw
a wild pitch in the bottom of the
last inning and Joe Joyer, who had
moved around the bases to third
base by being hit by a pitch and
on two passed balls, scored the
Red Sox’ lone run of the game.
League-leading hitter Bobby Houze
turned in a pair of singles for four
trips to the plate, making him the
leading hitter of the game and
leaving his first place batting av
erage at .583. Jim Bevans pound
ed his fourth homer over the left-
center field wall in the fourth in
ning.
A total of twenty hits in the
Senator-Oriole game raised several
batting averages with Walter Var-
vel leading the pack with two
doubles and a single for four times
at bat. Jay Pewthers’ single in the
last of the sixth inning drove in
the Orioles’ tying run and then
on the same play the Senators’
third baseman committed an er
ror, allowing the winning runs to
score. Victorious pitcher Jay Pew
thers, holder of second place in
league batting averages with .483,
threw nine strikeouts, allowed only
In Wednesday play Red Sox
pitcher Joe Joyer came through
with a shut-out and a one-hitter
against the Orioles, throwing 11
strike-outs and walking three. Jay
Pewthers got the only Oriole hit in
the first inning. The final score
7-0, Sox.
The second Wednesday game
was a pitcher’s duel, both pitchers,
Jim Mills of the Senators and Son
ny Benividez of the White Sox,
holding no-hitters until the final
innings of play.
