The Longhorns, with their threats of Southern, Ganey and other outstanding track and field men, are expected to win their fifth consecutive title at Dallas on May 9 and 10. This year, for the first time in several years, the Cadets are not favored for runner-up honors. The Farmer’s have finished second the past four years, and not since 1941, below second. The versatile Emmett Small wood, who finished third in the de cathlon at the recent Kansas Re lays, will lead Aggie entries Thurs day night. He is entered in the 100-yard dash, sprint relay, broad jump and low hurdles. While entering as many as seven events in the spring meets this year, Smallwood has neglected his WM: m - t; specialties, the lows and broad jump. Now that the decathlon sea son is finished he may better his marks in the lows and broad jump. The senior track and field man has run a :23.9 flight in the lows and leaped 24-314 in the broad jump. He holds the SWC record in the latter at 25 feet, IVs inches. Varsity Entries Sprint relay—Joe Flood, Bill Palmer, Ernie Uribe, Smallwood. Main Bryan SWC Committee Meets Next Week (2P)—Athletes may have to make higher grades to meet eligibility re quirements if the Southwest Con ference adopts a proposal that comes before it at its spring meet ing here next week. Consideration of the adoption of qualitative requirement as well as quantitative will be the main topic of discussion of the faculty com mittee, governing body of the con ference, in its sessions Friday and Saturday. The league always has had a minimum number of hours that had to be passed in order to be eligible, but never before has there been a requirement as to how high the grades must be. This matter Was discussed at the last meeting of the conference. Other than the scholarship point there appears little due to come before the conference unless some cases of recruiting should arise. Secretary Howard Grubss said that any reports of investigations completed since the December meeting would be submitted. The NCAA handed Southern Methodist a year’s probation be cause it gave Glynn Gregory, the Abilene High School star, a job in the oil fields “for which he was not qualified.” But it was mild and carried no penalty that would prevent SMU participating in championship contests or bowl games. The conference at its last meet ing reprimanded SMU for the methods used in recruiting Greg ory and, Grubbs admitted, could reopen the case in view of the NGAA action. The golf, tennis and track meets will be held at the same time. Golf will be at the DAC Country Club Thursday and Friday and will be a 72-hole test. Tennis will be Thurs day, Friday and Saturday, also at DAC Country Club. Preliminaries in track and field will be at Ownby Stadium at South ern Methodist University Friday afternoon with finals in freshman field events, and one final in the varsity division—the discus throw. All other finals will be Saturday afternoon.
