All students who are candidates for the
degree of Doctor of Philosophy are required
to order hoods as well as the doctor’s cap
and goi

wn, and to leave the hoods with the
Registrar no later than 1 p. m. Tuesday,
May 20. The Ph.D. hoods will not be
worn in the procession since all such candi
dates will be hooded on the stage.
Candidates for the Master’s Degree will
wear the master’s cap and gown; those
who are candidates for the Bachelor’s De
gree, except military students, will wear
the bachelor’s cap and gown. All Military
students who are candidates for degrees
will wear appropriate military uniforms in
lieu of the academic regalia.
Rental of caps and gowns may be ar
ranged with the Exchange Store. Orders
may be placed between 8 a m., April 21
and 12 noon, Saturday, May 17. The rental
is as follows: doctor’s cap and gown $4.25,
master’s cap and gown $3.75, bachelor’s
cap and gown $3.25. Hood rental is the
same as that for cap and gown.

WESTERN BARBECUED BEANS

% cup tomato juice
% cup chili sauce
’A cup diced dill pickle
3 drops Tabasco sauce
2 cans (1-pound size pork & beans

IVz pounds gi'ound lean beef
IVz teaspoon salt
X A teaspoon pepper
1 clove garlic, minced
3 tablespoons cooking oil
% cup chopped onion
Combine ground beef, salt, pepper and garlic. Saute in cooking
oil in large skillet over medium heat until lightly browned. Add onion
and brown a few minutes longer until onion is golden. Remove from
heat an add remaining ingredients.
Pour into bean pot or 9-inch square baking dish. If desired,
garnish with onion rings and drizzle with a little catsup. Bake in a
slow oven (325 degrees) 40 to 45 minutes. Serves 8.
RANGER COOKIES
1 cup shortening 2 cups flour
1 cup brown sugar 2 teaspoons soda
1 cup white sugar , 1 teaspoon baking powder
2 beaten eggs Vz teaspoon salt
2 cups corn flakes 1 cup nuts or coconut
2 cups raw oatmeal 1 teaspoon vanilla
Cream shortening and sugars. Add eggs, corn flakes and oatmeal.
Sift together the flour, soda, baking powder and salt. Add to creamed
mixture. Then add nuts or coconut and vanilla. Drop on lightly greased
cookies sheet. Bake at 350 degrees.
CANDIED YAMS
% cup pineapple juice 1 medium orange, sliced
% cup sugar 2 No. 2 cans yams, drained and
2 teaspoons cornstrach sliced
% cup water
Combine pineapple juice and sugar; heat to boiling point over
medium heat. Combine cornstarch and water; add to pineapple juice
and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Add orange slices and
mix well.
Arrange yams in-buttered 2-quart baking dish. Pour fruit sauce
over yams. Bake in 350-degree oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Makes 5
or 6 servings.
SWEET SOUR POT ROAST
4-5 pound beef rump roast ^ cup vinegar
1 teaspoon salt 14 cup dark molasses
14 teaspoon pepper 8 medium carrots
% teaspoon each of marjoram, 8 medium potatoes, halved
thyme, nutmeg 2 medium onions, sliced
2 tablespoons shortening
Rub roast on all sides with salt, pepper and spices. Heat shorten
ing in heavy skillet or dutch oven. Brown meat on all sides over
medium heat. Combine vinegar and molasses and pour over meat.
Cover tightly and simmer until nearly tender—about 2 hours.
Place carrots and potatoes around meat and lay onion slices on
top of roast. Cover and continue cooking 20-30 minutes longer, until
vegetables ate tender.. Remove roast and vegetables carefully to
serving platter. Garnish with parsley. Make gravy from drippings.
Serves 8.
