Gridders Rip Through 13th Session
By BOB WEEKLEY
Hot, sultry weather brought out
the best in the spring gridders yes
terday with the Ags charging
through the workout in one of their
best offensive showings to date.
After Wednesday’s session Coach
Jim Myers said: “The white and
blue teams’ offense is moving
pretty good. The overall timing of
plays is much better.”
The single wing mentor con
tinued:
“The men are learning their

plays. Everybody is finding out
where the (running) holes are.”
Fullback Gordon LeBeouf had no
trouble finding the open spots in
the line. The young sophomore
ripped through the opposing team
with the power of a bull. Tailback
Luther Hall and wingback Randy
Sims also drew praise from their
coach.
“Hall ran real good,” said Myers,
“And Sims is going to make a fine
wingback.” Sims is a smooth run
ner with unusual coordination and
ability.
The white and blue team scrim
maged each other in the last phasg
of the practice session, with both
teams moving the ball consistently
for long gains. Line play was im-

proved with End John Tracey back
in the ranks. Center Gale Oliver
turned in a fine performance both
on offense and defense. Roy North-
rup, Tom Austin, Wayne Labar
and Jerry Peveto drew praise from
the staff for their work during the
scrimmage.
After 13 days of spring training
the squad is showing remarkable
improvement. Less time was spent
on individual fundamentals and the
coaches were able to increase their
work on the rough spots in team
play.
Pass defense showed improve
ment and the defensive units dis
played more aggressiveness than in
the past. Tackle Ken Beck and
Guard Murray Trimble broke
through the offensive unit several
times to throw the runners for a
loss.
Myers indicated that the block
ing of the wing backs has im
proved. Jack Estes, Ronnie
Fontenot and Sims are the leading
candidates for the position.
“The position of tailback is the
problem right now,” said Myers.
Charles Milstead has missed most
of the spring training days with an
injured knee, working out in sweats
most of the time. Ed Dudley is a
much improved runner and passer
and Hall is coming along fine.
Myers plans to lighten the train
ing periods tomorrow, but the
squad is expected to move at full
speed right up to the intrasquad
game Saturday night. The three
days of spring training left after
the game will be spent largely on
fundamentals.
Injuries are down to a minimum
now with the once long list of play
ers with the “red cross” on their
shorts greatly reduced.
