4 Gridders Named
Coach Jim Myers has announced
the pending signing to a letter of
intent of Bob Caskey of Gon
zales, 6-0 185-pound back and
thi-ee outstanding junior college
stars, Bubba McLean and Mack
Hall of Tyler and Philbert An
thony Santia of Texarkana.
The three jaycees will accept
scholarships next fall, while the
prep star will sign as soon as
track season is over.
Santia was an all-America
guard at Texarkana last fall while
McLean was one of the top JC
backs in the nation. Hall is an
end.
Caskey was an all-state AA se

Coach Jim Myers worked the
Aggies on defense yesterday af
ternoon, as spring training enter
ed its third day. According to
Southwest Conference and NCAA
rules, the team will be allowed
18 working days in a 28-day per
iod.
Not since 1945 has an Aggie
single wing formation appeared
on the A&M campus—and the last
time a single wing team played
on Kyle Field was in 1954 when
Bowden Wyatt’s conference cham
pion team Arkansas, who ran the
Tennessee version of the single
wing, tripped the “thin thirty.”
The Aggie single wing will re
semble more closely the UCLA-
type of attack, for it was at the
California school the Aggie men
tor learned his trade under the
old master, Coach ‘Red’ Sanders.
Only four starters from the
1957 team return in Kenneth Beck,
tackle from Minden, La.; Allen
Goehring, guard from San Mar
cos; John Tracey, Philadelphia
end; and fullback Richard Gay,
from Shreveport, La.
Howevei’, there is quite an im
pressive ci’op of lettermen, with
16 award winners returning from
last year’s squad.
Murray Trimble, the one-armed
guard from Alabama, will also
return after missing the 1957 sea
son. He is a two year letterman.
Other lettermen returning are
tackle Bill Darwin, Houston jun
ior; centei’s Ray Doucet, Neder
land senior and Gale Oliver, Re
fugio junior; guards Bill Godwin,
Orangefield junior; Tommy How-
ax-d, Galveston senior; Carl Luna,
Garland juniox*, Joe Munson, Ang-
leton junior and Buddy Payne,
Houston, junior who was injured
in the first day of spring drills.
Don Smith, Phillips senior and
backs Chax-lie Mifstead, Gordon
LeBoeuf, and Robert Sander’s com
plete the list.
At the present time, competition
centers around the most vital part
of the lineup—the tailback.
