With Tuesday’s loss to Rice,
the Texas Aggies’ chances of ac
quiring a portion of the South
west Conference championship be
came very minute, indeed.
Jerry Abernathy is about all
Rice had to offer the Cadets, but
it proved to be more than enough
as the Houston hurler took com
mand of A&M. He allowed but
seven well-spaced hits, one of
which was a double by catcher
Gary Herrington.
However, the picture might not
be so dark as would be believed.
The chances that the weaker teams
in the conference can rise up for
an unexpected victory came clear
Tuesday as the TCU Frogs posted
their first conference victory of
the season—over hard-hitting Bay
lor.
The Froggies pitching might
have awakened, as for the first

“Jockey brand underwear
made me Phi Beta Kappa!”
“ ‘Amazing scholarship’, said the Dean. ‘Cheating!’ cried my
fellow students. But I knew the real reason for my becoming an
honor student. My tailored-to-fit Jockey brand briefs were so
comfortable that naturally I found it easy to study better and
get straight A’s.”
“ ‘If your brand is Jockey, you won’t need any ponies’, I tell
my friends. It’s true, too. You see. Jockey—and only Jockey
brand—uses thirteen separate pieces to provide a perfectly smooth
fit. You feel better—and you study better—when you wear com
fortable Jockey briefs.”
Jockey briefs are the most
copied underwear in the
world. Be sure you get
genuine Jockey brand—
they’re tailored to fit.

time this season, a TCU pitcher
was able to go the route.
As far as A&M is concerned,
however, the big game was played
in Austin yesterday. The Ponies
were planning on using one of the
conference’s top hurlers in Carl
Schlemeyer to try to stop the Tex
as hitting attack. The Pony
pitcher has compiled a 3-1 pitching
record this season and has an
amazing .24 earned run mark.
The Steers planned on using
lefthander Bob Sudderth, former
ly of Dallas Sunset to gain their
sixth consecutive conference vic
tory. Sudderth has a 4-1 record
and a 2.60 e.r.a.
Nevertheless, Texas is not so
strong as to be called invincible.
The Aggies will get their chance
at stopping the Steers this Satur-
Nichols Cuts Foot;
Out Of Action For
At Least 2 Weeks
Coach Joe Fagan’s golf team
will have to start their games this
week without the services of one
of their mainstays, Bobby Nichols.
Nichols cut his foot while water
' skiing in Temple
: over the Easter
holidays.
Fagan reports
1 that Nichols will
definitely be out
of the match with
Western Illinois
to be played here
Saturday. The
coach also expressed his doubts
that his first team starter will
play in the first conference game
of the season with Arkansas, to
be played on the A&M course
this Saturday.
Nichols hopes to be in action
within ten days at the most, and
will definitely be ready for the
Southwest Conference meet.
During Nichols’ absence, Mickey
Michella will start in the first
slot, followed by A1 Jones and
Buck Pruitt. Fourth starter is
to be decided in a playoff match
between Delver Jones and Hillry
Ranson, reports Fagan.
The Aggie linksmen will see
quite a bit of action next week.
They will meet North Texas in
Denton Monday and SMU at Dal
las Tuesday. Saturday they travel
to Lubbock for a contest with
Texas Tech.
day on Kyle Field in their first
game of the three game series.
The top three hitters in ths con
ference sport tho orapge and white
of Texas University in George
Myers (.500), Max Alvis (.476),
and Woody Woodman (.450).
Shortly behind the big three are
Jerry Sims of Rice and A. C. Mil
ler of Baylor, who bat a .400 and
.364 respectively.
Lloyd Stone is the Cadets’ lead
ing hitter with .352. Strangely
enough, a pitcher is the runner-up
from the hitting side of the pic
ture, as Donnie Hullum sports a
.300 average.
Toby Newton is the “second
winningest” pitcher in the con
ference behind George Myers of
Texas. Myers has won 3 games
and lost none, with an e.r.a. of
0.33. However, the Galveston
hurler has yielded 4.50 runs per
game in winning two and losing
one.
In team batting, Texas of
course leads the parade with a
hefty .306. Baylor is second with
a poor .233 mark, followed by
A&M’s .220.
From the statistics, it is evi
dent that the conference is weak
in hitting teams.
Saturday’s game could well de
cide the future for the Cadet nine.
Game time is 2 p.m.
Campanella Gains
Strength In Arms
Roy Campanella, Los Angeles
Dodger catcher who suffered a
broken neck in a January traffic
accident, is slowly regaining
strength in his arms but is not
yet able to pick up an object, a
hospital spokesman said Tuesday.
Campanella, still paralyzed from
his waist down, is rolled over every
thi’ee or four hours, the spokes
man said.
“He can’t roll over by himself
yet,” the spokesman said.
There has been no bulletin on
the catcher’s condition since March
7, but hospital authorities have in
dicated that one is planned for
later this week. The last report
was pessimistic regarding his
chances of playing ball again be
cause of the slowness of the re
laxing of the paralysis.
Brown,Dupas
Predict KO’s
Lightweight champion Joe
Brown and flashy contender Ralph
Dupas both are predicting a knock
out victory in their title fight at
Houston next month.
The 21-year-old Dupas, a sur
prisingly easy winner over wel
terweight Ramon Fuentes of Los
Angeles in a 10-rounder last night,
bristled when told Brown said ho
would be “surprised if the fight
goes beyond 10 rounds.”
Brown fought a three-round ex
hibition on the Dupas-Fuentes
card and said Dupas lacked enough
weapons to take the title.
Dupas had a slightly different
opinion.
“Well, you can tell Brown fo
me that I’ll be in there pitchin
for a knockout too, and I thin
I can do it. I’ll be ready to go th<
distance, but I don’t intend to gi
15 rounds if I don’t have to.”
