The Battalion College Station (Brazos County), Texas Wednesday, April 9, 1958 PAGE 3 Spring Drills Underway In Myers’ Era The tractor which Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant souped-up to run the speedy split-T was success fully converted to the more power ful single wing type transmission Monday as Coach Jim Myers op ened spring drills on Kyle Field. With a three-game losing streak constantly reminding them of their late finish in 1957, the Texas Aggies donned the “new look” in Aggie football—the light ning-fast single wing—the only formation the Aggies faced that they couldn’t whip. Gone to Alabama is the split-T, with the quarterbacks, halfbacks and ‘running on the sound’ while h 1 ? its place loomed what might become the scourge of the South west Conference, the single wing Kith its tailbacks, blocking backs, pulling guards and ground-rip ping power. The first day’s practice found 100 men reporting for practice, consisting of 16 lettermen and all but two of the returning squad- men along with various other can didates who are bidding for po sitions on the team. Charley Northrup, freshman center was out with the flu while Charley Sanford gained the injur ed list with a broken leg—not acquired on the practice field. Sophomore letterman guard Buddy Payne and squadman tackle Janies Vann were the only injur ies as Payne suffered an injured knee and Vann an injured shoul- i*der. Payne was plagued by a broken jaw last season, and was only able to play in the final two contests. V The Cadets plunged full speed into their new diet, which highly pleased their new mentor. Myers said “We think they are absorb ing the material very well. They know their plays and seem to un derstand the new system.” While the Cadets’ new coach expressed delight with the ball handling and lack of fumbles on anaps from center, he still men- Save your temper.. 4 save your time! % % % r r Fly Continental Super Convair to DALLAS HOUSTON FORT WORTH New, faster, more luxuri ous .. .with latest weather- avoidance Radar equip ment for smoother flights. There was an abundance of tal ent at the key positions, with 13 men reporting for tailback, but the Aggie coach expi’essed hopes to alter the positions after every one has been given an equal chance. The first unit backfield was com posed of Charlie Milstead at tail back, along with Gordon LeBoeuf at fullback, Richard Gay at block ing back and a host of wingbacks, including Ronnie Fontenot, who was a potential tailback prior to the opening of the spring drills. In the line, there were new po sitions, with a ‘weak side’ and a ‘strong side’—the strong side be ing the part of the line playing in front of the most backfield men. At the terminals were lettermen John Tracey and Don Smith, while at tackles were Kenneth Beck and Bill Darwin. Murray Trimble, one-armed guard from Hanceville, Ala. occupied one guard position with Allen Goehring in the other guard slot. Sophs Gayle Oliver and Byron Caruthers alternated at the pivot. Myers has plans to work the squad through Thursday of this week—leaving Friday and Satur day morning for recruiting—and continuing the training schedule Saturday afternoon. The practice field was open to the public the first two days, but Myers now asks that people wish ing to view the proceedings stay in the stands, as unauthorized spectators will not be permitted on the playing field. The Aggies have the “new look” in their coaching staff, also with Elmer Smith and Willie Zapalac the only familiar faces. Smith works with the centers and line backers and Zapalac tutors the de fensive backs. From Texas Tech comes Bud Sherrod, who will work with the ends; John Michels, of Tennessee, who works with the guards; Doug Bradley, formerly of UCLA and Iowa State, who drills the offens ive backs; Bill Jones, who will be freshman coach next fall, works with offensive backs; and Russ Faulkinberry, from the Iowa State staff, who will instruct the tackles.
