Four years ago, when Paul Bry
ant came from out of the Kentucky
hills to coach football at Texas
A&M, the Aggies proclaimed “The
Bear” was the best contribution
Kentucky had ever given to Texas.
As the conference golf tourna
ment draws near, however, it is
apparent that the land of fast
horses and beautiful women—or
vice versa—has also donated one of
the nation’s top collegiate golfers
in Bobby Nichols, A&M’s senior
golfer.
He came to Aggieland the same
year as did Bryant, but even though
the Bear of the Brazos has gone

into exile in Alabama and no long

nents, Bobby remains to take his
share of the Southwest Conference
honors and deal misery on the
greens and fairways.
At the ripe old age of ten years,
Nichols started his golfing career
near his home in Louisville, Ky.
After a few years of caddying and
watching, he decided it was time to
launch his own golf career’—and
he’s burned up the links ever since.
His greatest achievement — to
date—at A&M was winning the
1956 Southwestern Inter-Collegiate
Golf Championship.
However, this is but one of his
many kudos. In 1953 and 1954, he
reaped a grand harvest of honors.
As a high school student, he cop
ped both the Kentucky State High
School and State Juniors Cham
pionships.
In 1956, Bobby won the Ken
tucky Public Links Championship,
and to prove it wasn’t luck, he
captured the crown again in 1957.
After winning the Public Links
trophy, Bobby continued his domi
nation in the Bluegrass State by
winning the Kentucky State Ama
teur Championship.
So, this week, Lamar Tech, North
Texas and Mississippi Southern
will have to centend with the Ag
gies’ ace golfer, and along about
May 8-9, the members of the SWC
will face a similar task.
From his past record, “Nick” or
“Snake” as he is affectionately
called, has good motives for going
professional on graduation—that is
after his 6-month tour in khaki—
in Kentucky, at Fort Knox.
When asked why he was going
pro instead of following a more
rigorous occupation, Bobby said:
“You can’t eat silver cups.”
