1 T The Battalion College Station (Brazos County), Texas PAGE 2 Friday, February 28, 1958 Art for Aggies 9 Sake By WELTON JONES Maurice Evans and his organization, who will present “No Time For Sergeants” on a Town Hall program Monday, have done a very meritorius service indeed for the millions of American theater-lovers who don’t live in the immediate vicinity of Broadway. What they have managed to do, in effect, is arrange to present, in cities like Col lege Station (and, of course, on stages like that at White Coliseum) a complete, out standing Broadway hit, only two years and three months after it opened in New York! Evans, famed for his “G. I. Hamlet” with which he toured both theaters of World War II, is said by many to have been main ly responsible for keeping Shake speare alive in the U. S. during the 1930’s. Now, along with other promoters with other tour ing troupes, he may be responsi ble for a new revival of “theater in the sticks”. » For it seems that the chief objection to the legitimate the atre in the United States today/ is the fact that it is available to a relative few in the largest cities, principally New York. (Say what you will, amateur companies and little theater groups will never replace the same show done by a group of competent professionals. They aren’t, in fact, intended to). The twentieth century has seen a predominance of the theater as an entertainment medium match ed, perhaps, by no other period in history. The plays we get today are good—very good. But until they can reach the population of the whole country on the legitimate stage, they can’t fulfill their entire enter tainment possibilities and obliga tions. Producers like Evans are doing their part. characters played, in the Evans company, by 21 actors, “No Time For Sergeants” is probably the most elaborate stage attraction to appear here in many years. Charles Hohman, a former ser viceman who worked with Evans in the Pacific during the war, will be seen as Will Stockdale, the most cheerful disorganizer ever inflicted upon the U. S. Air Force by the draft. This is the role created on Broadway by Andy Griffith. Hoh man stepped into the role after Griffith left for greener pas tures and he played it for the last 100 performances there. Among other members of the cast will be Tucker Ashworth as Stockdale’s studious friend Ben, who really wanted in the In fantry; Rex Everhart as the long-suffering sergeant of the title; and three members of the original Broadway cast, James Millhollin, Howard Freeman and Royal Beal as a psychiatrist and two generals, respectively. Morton Da Costa, who directed the show, currently has two oth er long-run hits on Broadway: “Auntie Marne” and “The Music Man”, this season’s “big” musical. Louis Kronenberger, editor of the highly-respected “Best Plays of 19 ” annual, picked “Ser geants” as one of his top ten choices for the 1955-56 season. In a season filled with heavy drama (“Waiting for Godot”, “Hatful of Rain”, “The Chalk Garden”, “A View From the Bridge” and others) he hailed it as “simple-minded fun” with “sustained improbability and morning-fresh outrageousness”. The play was presented for 800 performances in New York. It will come to College Station after a week in Houston.
