Clear skies and windy weather
should greet Coach Beau Bell’s
baseball team when they trot out
onto the diamond Saturday for
their spring debut against the Uni
versity of Houston Cougars in
Kyle Field at 2 p. m.
The starting lineup for the
Cadets has not been decided yet,
but the veteran coach will pro
bably have three of his top pitch
ers ready for action, each one see
ing three innings of play against
the tough Cougars.
The starting moundsmen will be
picked from the group of Co-Cap
tain Toby Newton, Percy Sander
son and Donnie Hullum. Newton
and Hullum are lettermen from
last year’s team while Sanderson
was the pitching ace of the fresh
man team.
The Farmers start the season
top-seeded as the number one team
in the conference to beat. Con
ference play will start March 21
when the Aggies face the Baylor
Bears at College Station.
Expected to lead the Cadets in
their fight for the crown will
be All-SWC players Gary Herring
ton, catcher, and Wendell Reed,
outfielder. Ready to assist the two
star players will be Dickie Thomas
in the outfield along with James
Smotherman and an infield ex
pected to be predominantly sopho-

attendance thus far and the total
approaching the 300,000 mark.
Texas Tech, making its first race
in the league, has almost doubled
its attendance over last year.
